The Naked Truth
I often used to wonder why people who become bedridden sometimes lose the will to live. Is it because they lose their freedom and the ability to do things independently? But the truth is, many of us are quite comfortable letting others do things for us.
So what really disturbs us?
Perhaps it is the vulnerability of our naked body. The moment someone has to see or touch you in such a private state, something changes. The mystery and dignity that clothing once helped maintain slowly fades. Maybe that is why those who have seen us vulnerable—parents, siblings, spouses, or childhood friends—sometimes begin to take us for granted.
Caregivers, over time, may begin to see the person less as an individual with a rich life story and more as a body that requires care. No matter how educated, accomplished, or wealthy someone may be, in that moment they can be reduced to a physical body with its needs and limitations.
For me, maintaining dignity and respect with caregivers has been an ongoing challenge. My answer has been simple: to indulge in life and continue working as much as I can. I no longer worry about whether people see me merely as a body or as a soul determined to transform lives.
