Why did I choose oncology?
Science. Precision. Human connection.
Choosing a medical specialty is a decision that shapes not only your professional journey, but also the way you understand medicine, patients, and responsibility.
For me, that journey led to oncology — with Radiation Oncology forming an important part of my training and clinical journey, and Medical Oncology now being an important part of my academic and professional work.
My medical education began with my MBBS from S.C.B. Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, followed by postgraduate training in MD Radiation Oncology through S.C.B. Medical College and Hospital / Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer, Cuttack.
My journey has also included three years of Senior Residency in Radiation Oncology and experience in Medical Oncology at AHPGIC, Cuttack.
Today, I serve as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Oncology at Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer, Cuttack. This role has further strengthened my understanding of systemic cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, and the importance of looking at cancer care from a comprehensive perspective.
Over the years, oncology has taught me that cancer care is not simply about choosing a treatment.
It is about understanding the individual patient.
It is about asking:
What is the right approach for this patient?
How can treatment be delivered with precision?
What does the available evidence tell us?
And how can we help patients and families understand the journey ahead?
With advances in oncology, treatment has continued to evolve across both radiation and medical oncology. In radiation oncology, technologies such as IGRT, IMRT, VMAT, SRS and SBRT have expanded the possibilities for precise radiation treatment, while chemotherapy and other systemic treatments remain important components of cancer care depending on the individual patient and disease.
