Secrets and intimacy
Page 218
"We feared that if we ever revealed ourselves as we were, we would surely be rejected."
Basic Text, p. 32
Having relationships without barriers, ones in which we can be entirely open with our feelings, is something many of us desire. At the same time, the possibility of such intimacy causes us more fear than almost any other situation in life.
If we examine what frightens us, we'll usually find that we are attempting to hide an aspect of our personalities that we are ashamed of, an aspect we sometimes haven't even admitted to ourselves. We don't want others to know of our insecurities, our pain, or our neediness, so we simply refuse to expose them. We may imagine that if no one knows about our imperfections, those imperfections will cease to exist.
This is the point where our relationships stop. Anyone who enters our lives will not get past the point at which our secrets begin. To maintain intimacy in a relationship, it is essential that we acknowledge our defects and accept them. When we do, the fortress of denial, erected to keep these things hidden, will come crashing down, enabling us to build up our relationships with others.
Just for Today: I have opportunities to share my inner self. I will take advantage of those opportunities and draw closer to those I love.

My Journey Through Recovery

If there’s one thing I want people to understand, it’s that addiction isn’t always about the substance or the habit. Sometimes, it’s about the pain you carry in silence. It’s about waking up every day feeling like you’re fighting a battle that no one else can see. And sometimes, the hardest part isn’t the addiction itself—it’s having no one to talk to, no one you feel safe enough to tell, “I’m not okay.”

I know what that loneliness feels like.

There were moments when I questioned whether things would ever get better. Moments when giving up seemed easier than trying again. But somewhere inside me, there was a small voice that refused to disappear. It reminded me that my story wasn’t over. That voice became my motivation when I had nothing else to hold on to.

Recovery didn’t happen overnight. It wasn’t a straight line. It was built one decision at a time, one difficult day at a time, one promise to myself at a time. Every step forward came with fear, doubt, and pain—but I kept walking.

The greatest achievement of my life isn’t simply staying in recovery. It’s earning back something I thought I had lost forever: the trust of my family.

Trust isn’t rebuilt with words. It’s rebuilt with actions, consistency, honesty, and time. Every day I chose recovery, I was also choosing to become someone my family could believe in again. The day I saw that trust return to their eyes, I realized that every struggle had been worth it.

Today, I don’t stand here as someone who is perfect. I stand here as someone who refused to let addiction write the final chapter of my life. My scars remind me where I’ve been, but they no longer decide where I’m going.

And if anyone listening feels trapped, alone, or convinced that no one understands, I want you to hear this: your life is worth fighting for. Recovery isn’t easy, but neither is living a life controlled by addiction. The road is hard, but it leads somewhere beautiful.

Never be ashamed to ask for help. Never believe that your past is stronger than your future. And never forget that even the smallest step forward is still progress.

My journey taught me that hope can survive even in the darkest places. Today, I carry that hope not only for myself but for everyone who is still searching for a reason to keep going.

Because if I could find my way back to myself… then maybe someone else can too… and guidance can really help you out
