LOWER ABDOMINAL OR PELVIC PAIN: Know When to Seek Care
Lower abdominal or pelvic pain can have many possible causes and does not automatically mean you have a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
Urinary, digestive and gynecological conditions are among the possibilities. In sexually active adults, however, infections including chlamydia and gonorrhoea may sometimes need to be considered depending on symptoms and individual circumstances.
In women, certain infections can spread to the upper reproductive tract and contribute to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) if not appropriately treated.
⚠️ Consider medical evaluation when pelvic or lower abdominal pain occurs with:
• Unusual vaginal or urethral discharge
• Pain or burning during urination
• Bleeding between periods or after in*******se
• Fever, nausea or feeling generally unwell
• Pain during in*******se
🔬 Symptoms alone cannot diagnose an STI.
Depending on the circumstances, evaluation may involve a clinical history and examination, urine testing, pregnancy testing when relevant, STI testing, or other investigations to help determine the cause.
🚨 Seek urgent medical attention for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fainting or severe dizziness, persistent vomiting, heavy bleeding, or significant abdominal/pelvic pain during pregnancy or when pregnancy is possible.
💊 Avoid starting antibiotics on your own or assuming that every episode of pelvic pain is caused by an STI. The appropriate treatment depends on the underlying cause.
