Most of us would be talking about it nonstop.

But what if I told you that medication already exists?

And many clinicians still don't prescribe it regularly.

The medication is Acamprosate

Why does one of the strongest based treatments in continue to receive less attention than newer and more frequently discussed options?

Is it the dosing?

Is it marketing?

Is it patient selection?

Or is it simply that evidence alone doesn't determine what gets prescribed?

These are some of the questions we'll be exploring today in:

🚭 The ni****ne industry doesn't sell addiction.

It sells flavours.

It sells trends.

It sells identity.

It sells belonging.

Nobody wakes up and says: "I want to become dependent on ni****ne."

People start because it looks harmless. Because friends use it. Because it's flavoured. Because it feels modern. Because it seems different from smoking.

That's exactly why awareness matters.

As an Addiction Psychiatrist I've met countless individuals who never planned to become dependent. Most started with curiosity, stress, social influence, or the belief that they could stop whenever they wanted.

The challenge isn't just ni****ne.

It's the appeal that surrounds it.

This ***coDay, let's look beyond the marketing and ask a simple question:

👉 If a product needs flavours, influencers, trends, and lifestyle branding to sell itself, what exactly is being marketed?

What they sell: ✨ Flavours ✨ Trends ✨ Lifestyle

What you get: ⚠️ Ni****ne Dependence

What if we told patients with diabetes to “just use willpower”?

We don’t. Because it’s a medical condition.

Ni****ne addiction is too.

Tomorrow for World No To***co Day, I’m joining the Psychiatric Society of Dwarka to talk about Varenicline — a medication that blocks ni****ne from hijacking your brain.

The truth:
1. Willpower alone fails 95% of people 2. Varenicline + support DOUBLES your odds of quitting 3. Relapse is not failure. It’s part of recovery
You are not weak for struggling. You are human for trying.

Some institutions give you a degree.
Some institutions become part of your identity.

Maulana Azad Medical College is one of them.

From the lecture halls of MAMC to Super-specialization training at AIIMS New Delhi, this journey reflects something every Maulanian understands deeply — MAMC doesn’t just produce doctors, it produces clinicians who can thrive anywhere.

The clinical postings, overcrowded wards, endless duties, hostel memories, academic pressure, friendships, and the sheer resilience built during MBBS years shape a Maulanian differently. There is a reason why MAMC alumni continue to excel across clinical medicine, academics, research, leadership, public health, innovation, and super-specialty training in India and across the world.

We started our medical journey with MBBS from MAMC and later completed DM training in Addiction Psychiatry and Cardiology respectively at AIIMS New Delhi.

And there is perhaps no greater stage to carry that foundation forward than AIIMS New Delhi — the nation’s premier medical institute and the pinnacle of medical excellence, medical research, and super-specialty training in India.

Different specialties. Same roots.
Once a Maulanian, always a Maulanian. 🇮🇳🩺

My first co-SR when I joined residency at NDDTC, All India Institute of Medical Sciences 🎓

One of the most supportive, compassionate, and hardworking people I had the privilege to learn alongside during residency. From helping juniors settle into the demanding world of psychiatry training to now building Sukoon Psychiatric Clinic in Kaithal, her journey reflects dedication, empathy, and clinical excellence.

Proud to celebrate this milestone together — from AIIMS Delhi convocation halls to serving mental health in Haryana ✨

From co-SRs to DM graduates at All India Institute of Medical Sciences 🎓
Some people make residency easier just by being there — through duties, academics, stress, and the chaos of hospital life. Grateful for the friendship, support, and memories throughout this journey. Proud to celebrate this milestone together. Onwards and upwards, brother ✨

Behind every long medical journey, there are a few people who quietly become your strength through every phase of it.

As I attended my DM Convocation at AIIMS New Delhi, receiving my DM in Addiction Psychiatry, I kept thinking about one person who has been part of this entire journey from the very beginning — my wife.

Medicine is not an easy profession to live through.

People see degrees and convocation photographs.
What they usually do not see are the years behind them: the exhausting duties, academic pressure, missed occasions, emotional fatigue, uncertainty, constant exams, and the mental resilience required to keep going year after year.

And through every phase of it, she has stood beside me with unwavering support, intelligence, emotional strength, and grace.

She is genuinely one of the most brilliant and hardworking people I have ever known.

MBBS from AIIMS New Delhi.
MD from AIIMS New Delhi.
And currently pursuing DM in Pediatric Endocrinology from PGI Chandigarh.

But beyond the achievements, what makes me admire her most is her discipline, compassion, humility, emotional maturity, and ability to handle immense pressure while still remaining deeply kind and grounded.

Watching her grow as a doctor, clinician, and person has been incredibly inspiring.

This convocation felt special not only because of the degree — but because I got to share the moment with someone who truly understands every sacrifice behind it.

Two doctors.
Two superspeciality journeys.
One team through all the chaos, responsibilities, exams, and dreams.

Grateful for her today and every day. ❤️

From dreaming of becoming a doctor…
to receiving a DM in Addiction Psychiatry at AIIMS New Delhi.

12th May 2026 is a date I’ll remember forever.

People see a convocation photo.
But every doctor sitting in that hall knows what exists behind it: years of exams, night duties, pressure, uncertainty, sacrifice, emotionally difficult patient encounters, and the constant effort to become better — not just academically, but personally too.

One thing Psychiatry has taught me is that every human being has a story deeper than what appears on the surface.

And Addiction Psychiatry especially teaches you to look beyond labels, beyond stigma, and beyond judgement.

As I held my degree at the 51st Convocation of AIIMS New Delhi, I felt gratitude more than anything else — for my teachers, mentors, colleagues, family, friends, and patients who shaped this journey.

AIIMS is not just an institution.
For many doctors, it becomes part of your identity forever.

MBBS. MD Psychiatry. DNB Psychiatry. DM Addiction Psychiatry.

Still learning. Still growing.

Stepping up to the mic tomorrow evening. 🎙️

Always grateful for the opportunity to share clinical perspectives and contribute to the ongoing medical education of our field. I’ll be delivering the main address on the evolving boundaries of modern psychiatry, followed by what promises to be a high-yield discussion.

Looking forward to sharing the virtual stage with Dr. Prateek, Dr. Charvi, Dr. Shubhangi, and the rest of an incredibly sharp panel of colleagues.

We toast to our promotions. We drink over our breakups. It’s the only drug on earth where you have to actively justify not taking it. 🍷❌

Society normalizes it, but biology tells a different story.

As an Addiction Psychiatrist, the most common question I hear is: "Is my social drinking normal, or is it crossing a line?" Here is the clinical reality: The line between a "social lubricant" and a neurochemical dependency is incredibly thin. We have woven alcohol into our culture so deeply that we ignore the science. Global medical data now links alcohol use to over 200 distinct diseases and injury conditions.

Yet, when someone struggles to stop, we blame their "willpower."

Alcohol dependency is not a moral failing or a lack of discipline. It is a neurobiological adaptation. It physically alters the brain's reward system, making it a medical condition that requires a clinical approach—not just "trying harder."

It’s time we elevate the conversation around brain health, habits, and addiction.

🧠 Read the full clinical breakdown of what alcohol actually does to your brain at drsidharthsood.com (Link in Bio).

If this shifted your perspective, save this post as a reminder. If it could help someone you care about see through the illusion of "harmless" drinking, share it.
