Can a blood clot in the leg reach the lungs? Yes.
In DVT, a clot can sometimes travel to the lungs and cause Pulmonary Embolism, which can be life-threatening. For selected patients who cannot take blood thinners or when anticoagulation is not suitable, an IVC Filter may help trap the clot before it reaches the lungs.
Modern retrievable IVC filters can be placed through a minimally invasive procedure and may be removed when they are no longer needed, depending on the patient’s condition.
One small filter. One important role — helping protect the lungs from travelling clots.
