Heart disease does not always announce itself.

You can look fit, feel healthy and still have risk factors that you may not be aware of. That is why prevention begins with knowing your numbers, understanding your family history, staying active and making heart-healthy choices every day.

In my conversation with The Times of India for World Heart Day, we spoke about silent blockages, cholesterol, family history, exercise, stress, pollution and what to do when a heart attack strikes.

Most importantly, my message remains simple: don’t wait for a warning sign to start taking care of your heart.

Cardiovascular disease remains the world’s leading cause of death. Many of its risks can be prevented or managed. But warning signs are still missed, risk factors remain unchecked, and treatment often comes too late.

On World Heart Day today, I am joined by some of India’s leading interventional cardiologists in sharing a few messages that can make a real difference: Know your numbers, recognise the warning signs, make healthier choices, seek treatment in time, and ensure that quality cardiac care reaches more people.

Together, these messages reflect the spirit of this year’s World Heart Day theme, Don’t Miss a Beat — because protecting the heart means not missing the risk, the symptom, or the moment to act.

This World Heart Day, there are some things you really should take to heart.

Breathlessness. Unusual sweating. Chest pain. A change in heart rhythm. These can be warning signs, signals from your heart that deserve attention, not delay.

Recognise the signs. Respond in time. And when your heart is trying to tell you something, 'dil pe le.'

Don’t Miss a Beat is more than this year’s World Heart Day theme. It is a reminder to stay alert to your heart, today and every day.

An extremely successful INDIA VALVES 2026 – more than 1,000 attendees and packed halls right through to the final session, last day!

Truly gratifying to see the enthusiasm for learning, discussion, and collaboration throughout the meeting. Outstanding scientific content, superb international experts and renowned Indian faculty, INDIA VALVES continues to grow as an important platform for advancing transcatheter valve therapies and structural heart education in South-East Asia.

This year defined several Landmark Initiatives – development of Consensus Statements for Lifetime Management of Severe Calcific Aortic Stenosis in Indian Patients; the launch of the National India Valve Registry by the Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan ji, in the presence of the Hon’ble Health Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru K. G. Arunraj ji; and our partnership with PCR Valves for the Fundamental Course on TAVI & M-TEER.

Heartiest congratulations to the Course Directors Seth, . Sengottuvelu, Chandra, . B. Gopalamurugan and Singh Rao, Sharma for the outstanding success of the Course.

Our appreciation for the PCR team led by Prof Bernard Prendergast , and to our exceptional international and national faculty, whose experience, commitment and participation made the scientific programme so enriching. Proud of what we have achieved together — and even more excited about how these initiatives can contribute to improved outcomes for patients with valvular heart disease across India.

Privileged to have been interviewed by the European Medical Journal (EMJ) – Interventional Cardiology and to share some reflections and experiences from my 40 year journey in interventional cardiology — from witnessing the early days of balloon angioplasty to helping introduce and advance numerous new technologies
for PCI in in India and the Asia-Pacific region.

The conversation gave me an opportunity to reflect not only on how our field has evolved, but also on the principles that have guided me through the years of pushing the boundaries in complex angioplasties to save lives — innovation with a huge responsibility towards patient safety, continuous learning and treating every patient as we would our own family.

We also discussed the future of interventional cardiology — including bioresorbable technologies, digital health and AI — and the responsibility we have to ensure that advances in medicine translate into accessible, affordable and high-quality care for our patients.

Above all, I was pleased to share a message that I believe is particularly important for the next generation of cardiologists: the Five Cs — Care, Commitment, Compassion, Competence and Conscience. These values must remain at the heart of medicine, irrespective of how sophisticated our technology becomes.
My sincere thanks to EMJ for the privilege of this conversation and for giving me the opportunity to share my experiences, learnings and perspectives from a journey that still continues to be both exciting and deeply fulfilling.

Prevention is the future of heart care. From preventing heart disease to predicting heart attacks . In the latest issue of Voice of Healthcare, I shared my thoughts on why we must shift our focus from treating heart disease to identifying early signals and risks , so that preemptive action can prevent life-threatening heart disease.

Prevention today can protect the heart for years to come, decrease the disease burden and ensure the health of the nation in this epidemic of coronary artery disease.

*Severe mitral regurgitation (leakage of the mitral valve of the heart) can cause breathlessness, fatigue, recurrent hospitalizations for heart failure, and may ultimately lead to death. For many patients who are at high surgical risk, the MitraClip procedure (M-TEER) offers a relatively safe and effective non-surgical procedure that repairs the leaking valve, resulting in dramatic improvement in symptoms, enhanced quality of life, and improved survival.*

This 87 years old patient’s journey is a testament to how Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) can successfully reduce mitral valve leakage, relieve symptoms, and help patients regain an active and fulfilling life (reproduced with her permission for public education and awareness).

Every successful outcome even in most critical condition reflects the synergy of advanced technology, meticulous planning, a skilled Heart Team, and, above all, the trust and blessings of out patients.

As this remarkable lady so beautifully said, _*"Jitne din jiyun, achhe se jiyun"*_ — "As long as I live, I want to live well." That is precisely what modern structural heart interventions strive to achieve: not just adding years to life, but adding life to years.

A point to point 10 hours spent on travel to Hyderabad and back , on 17 th July Friday . BUT ABSOLUTELY WORTH.
At the “ Global Hypertension Summit Meeting” in Hyderabad ,
it was a pleasure to do interactive teaching to 150 DM students and early career interventional cardiologists for 2 hours on the advanced techniques in management of calcified lesions and anamalous coronary arteries.
MENTORING, TEACHING, ASPIRING THE YOUNG GEN IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY…it is worth it because it delivers the best to our patients and Nation 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Delighted to be part of the 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿'𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 and the session “𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲: 𝗔 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆.”

A stimulating discussion with Dr Ambrish Mithal and Prof. (Dr.) M. Wali, ably moderated by Dr Mamta Jain, whose insightful questions enriched the conversation. I hope the perspectives shared will benefit doctors, young physicians, and medical students committed to advancing patient care and healthcare leadership with ethics and compassion.

The health of doctors creates the health of the nation. So, I also urge doctors to look after their own health, mental and physical, social and spiritual wellbeing to balance out life, this would help to serve our patients and nation better and longer.
