Working in Interventional Radiology, I’ve come across my fair share of myths and misconceptions. Here are some of the most common ones we hear—and the reality behind them.
1. “A biopsy spreads cancer.”
❌ Myth: Putting a needle into a tumour during a biopsy can make the cancer spread.
✅ Reality: Biopsies are generally very safe, and tumour seeding from a properly performed biopsy is extremely rare. In many cases, a biopsy is essential to accurately identify the type of cancer and guide the right treatment.
2. “Varicose veins are gone once and for all after treatment.”
❌ Myth: Once varicose veins are treated, they can never come back.
✅ Reality: Treatment can effectively close or remove the treated veins, but it does not eliminate the underlying tendency to develop varicose veins. New veins can become problematic over time, so follow-up and lifestyle measures may still be important.
3. “If there’s no incision, it can’t be a real treatment.”
❌ Myth: IR only performs diagnostic scans.
✅ Reality: IR can diagnose AND treat conditions—sometimes without open surgery.
4. “Angiography is only a test.”
❌ Myth: DSA/angiography is just for looking at blood vessels.
✅ Reality: The same catheter can often be used to treat the problem during the procedure, such as embolization, angioplasty or stenting.
5. “IR is only for blood vessels.”
❌ Myth: IR = angiography.
✅ Reality: IR treats a huge range of conditions involving blood vessels, tumors, biliary system, kidneys, drainage collections, dialysis access and more.
6. “Tumor embolization means the whole tumor is removed.”
❌ Myth: Embolization is basically surgical tumor removal.
✅ Reality: Treatments such as TACE/TAE work differently—they target the tumor's blood supply and/or deliver treatment locally.
7. “Embolization means blocking blood flow to the body.”
❌ Myth: It's dangerous because blood supply is being blocked.
✅ Reality: Embolization is targeted—the goal is to block abnormal or unwanted blood flow while preserving healthy tissue.
8. “IR is only for very sick or last-resort patients.”
❌ Myth: You come to IR only when surgery isn't possible.
✅ Reality: IR can be considered as a first-line or alternative treatment.
