How Society and Marriage Expectations Are Changing in Today’s Society
Society is changing rapidly, and one of the biggest changes can be seen in the way people think about marriage, relationships, careers, lifestyle, and compatibility.
Over the last 40 years, Indian society has gone through a major transformation. Girls have become more educated, financially independent, and professionally established. Many women today are building their own careers and standing on their own feet.
At the same time, society's definition of a “suitable match” has also changed.
Earlier, families often looked very carefully at a person's habits, character, family background, profession, and reputation. If a boy was involved in alcohol or drugs, did not work, or had serious negative habits, families generally avoided establishing a relationship with him.
Similarly, some professions that were once viewed differently—such as beauty professionals, nurses, air hostesses, lawyers, and other independent careers—gradually became more accepted as women's participation in the workforce increased.
Then came the era of multinational companies and corporate careers. Marriage discussions increasingly started including salary packages.
A situation developed where people began comparing a girl's package with a boy's package—for example, ₹5 lakh versus ₹10 lakh, or later ₹20 lakh, ₹30 lakh, ₹40 lakh and even higher.
But today, another important change is taking place.
The New Generation of Professionals
Social media has created entirely new professions and sources of income.
Today we have content creators, YouTubers, influencers, digital entrepreneurs, social-media professionals, and people earning their livelihood through reels and online platforms.
These are genuine modern forms of work for many people, but they also create new questions for families considering marriage.
What kind of content does the person create?
What kind of lifestyle does he or she follow?
What kind of people do they interact with?
What is their reputation online?
Is their income stable?
What kind of public image have they created?
These questions are becoming increasingly relevant when families evaluate a potential marriage.
Just as families previously verified a person's workplace, profession, family background, and social reputation, today it may also be reasonable to understand a person's digital identity and online professional activities before taking a marriage decision.
This does not mean that being an influencer, YouTuber, content creator, or social-media professional is wrong.
Every profession deserves to be understood on its own merits.
Some people may prefer a traditional professional. Others may be comfortable with an entrepreneur, creator, influencer, or digital professional.
The important thing is not to judge someone simply by their profession. The important thing is to understand their character, responsibility, values, financial discipline, lifestyle, and intentions.
Perhaps, over time, we will also see more marriages between people who understand each other's digital careers—for example, a content creator marrying another creator, or a YouTuber marrying someone who understands the digital ecosystem.
Society has always evolved, and marriage expectations will continue to evolve with it.
What Should Families Actually Look For?
Instead of focusing only on salary, designation, profession, property, or social status, perhaps families should also look at the qualities that build a peaceful family life.
If a boy or girl:
1. Does not drink alcohol or use intoxicating substances;
2. Chooses friends and company carefully;
3. Does not unnecessarily waste money;
4. Has a small and meaningful circle of friends rather than constantly seeking unnecessary social attention;
5. Maintains a balanced lifestyle and gives appropriate time to family;
6. Respects parents and elders and knows how to communicate without unnecessary anger or disrespect;
7. Understands responsibility, commitment, honesty, and family values;
8. Is grateful for what they have and does not measure happiness only by money; and
9. Wants to build a peaceful and respectful family after marriage;
then these qualities can be valuable foundations for a healthy marriage.
In today's world, finding a person with good character, emotional maturity, responsibility, and respect for family can sometimes be more meaningful than simply finding someone with a high salary package.
The Real Meaning of a Good Marriage
A high package does not automatically guarantee a happy marriage.
A prestigious profession does not automatically guarantee compatibility.
A large house does not automatically create peace.
And social-media popularity does not automatically define a person's character.
Ultimately, marriage is about two people, their values, their behaviour, their ability to respect each other, their financial responsibility, and their willingness to build a family together.
If your son or daughter finds a partner who is responsible, respectful, honest, disciplined, caring, and committed to the relationship, then perhaps you already have something extremely valuable.
Be grateful for your children.
Be grateful for the values you have given them.
And be grateful if, after marriage, they are able to create a home where there is respect, peace, trust, love, and understanding.
That is what can make a family feel like heaven—not simply money, profession, property, or social status.
Society is changing. Marriage is changing. Professions are changing.
But the fundamental human values that create a strong family—trust, respect, responsibility, loyalty, understanding, and love—remain important.
This is my personal thought on the changing nature of relationships and marriage in today's society.
