Percutaneous Mitral Commissurotomy (PMC/PTMC): Treatment for Mitral Valve Stenosis
Mitral stenosis occurs when the mitral valve becomes narrowed, restricting blood flow through the heart. Common symptoms include breathlessness, fatigue, palpitations and reduced exercise tolerance.
What Is PMC/PTMC?
Percutaneous Mitral Commissurotomy (PMC), also known as Percutaneous Transluminal Mitral Commissurotomy (PTMC), is a minimally invasive, catheter-based procedure used to treat selected patients with mitral valve stenosis, particularly when associated with rheumatic heart disease.
During the procedure, a balloon catheter is guided through a blood vessel to the heart and positioned across the narrowed valve. The balloon is inflated to separate fused valve commissures, helping improve the valve opening and blood flow.
Potential Benefits
For appropriately selected patients, PMC/PTMC may help improve blood flow, relieve symptoms and offer an alternative to open-heart surgery. Recovery time and treatment outcomes varies.
