Acne Series: Part 3
Why does your skin behave well for three weeks and suddenly break out before your period?
โจDuring the menstrual cycle, the relative balance between oestrogen, progesterone and androgen activity changes.
In the days before menstruation, progesterone increases and causes water retention, more inflammation, and increased oil production in the skin.
So the pimple that appears before your period did not develop overnight.
The blockage inside that pore may have started several days or even weeks earlier. The premenstrual hormonal shift simply pushes an already vulnerable follicle towards visible inflammation.
This is why treating only the visible premenstrual pimples is usually not enough.
Effective management aims to prevent microcomedones and inflammation throughout the entire cycle. Consistency matters more than repeated last-minute spot treatment.
