🧪 Significance of Blood Collection Tube Colors
Each colored top tube is not just for identification—it contains specific additives that make it suitable for particular tests:
Grey top (Sodium Fluoride / Oxalate)
Used mainly for glucose testing. Sodium fluoride inhibits glycolysis, preventing glucose breakdown and ensuring accurate sugar levels.
🔴 Red Top (Plain / Clot Activator)
Used for serum-based tests like biochemistry, serology, and hormone assays. It allows blood to clot, and serum is then separated.
🟣 Purple/Lavender Top (EDTA)
Used for hematology tests such as CBC, ESR, and blood film. EDTA prevents clotting by binding calcium, preserving cell morphology.
🟡 Yellow Top (Gel / Serum Separator)
