First gynecologist visit? Here's what you should know before you go.
1. During an annual visit, we discuss lots of things including your period, birth control, in*******se, yearly screenings, STD prevention and screening and depending on your age, we typically perform a breast and pelvic exam.
2. You may or may not need a pelvic exam. This usually depends on whether you are sexually active. Even if you're 25+ years old but have never been sexually active, we may defer the exam and simply have a discussion based on your concerns.
3. If you don't want an exam, or aren't comfortable yet, you can decline. Consent matters, so if you aren't ready that's okay.
4. Exams should NOT hurt. They can be uncomfortable but if they hurt, you should tell your doctor. This can often be a symptom or sign of a problem or we can often adjust the exam to help with the discomfort-or just stop the exam if needed.
5. There will be a chaperone in the room (most often a nurse or medical assistant) to help the doctor and to ensure your safety (and the doctor's safety) during the exam.
