❓FAQ Friday: Can a Non-Smoker Get Lung Cancer?

Yes. Lung cancer isn’t only a smoker’s disease. While smoking is the leading risk factor, non-smokers can also develop lung cancer due to air pollution, second-hand smoke, genetic factors, radon exposure, and certain occupational hazards.

If you have a persistent cough, coughing up blood, unexplained weight loss, chest pain, or shortness of breath, don’t ignore these symptoms—regardless of your smoking history.

🎗 Early awareness. Early diagnosis. Better outcomes.

Head & Neck Cancer can affect more than just the mouth. It may involve the lips, tongue, throat, voice box (larynx), nasal cavity, sinuses, salivary glands, and other structures of the head and neck. Early awareness and timely diagnosis can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes.

On World Head & Neck Cancer Day, let’s raise awareness about the importance of recognizing early warning signs and seeking expert medical evaluation without delay.

Common warning signs include:
🔹 A persistent lump in the neck
🔹 Difficulty or pain while swallowing
🔹 A non-healing mouth ulcer
🔹 Persistent sore throat or hoarseness
🔹 Unexplained bleeding from the mouth or nose
🔹 Difficulty opening the mouth or persistent ear pain

Major risk factors include to***co (smoked and smokeless), excessive alcohol consumption, HPV infection, and prolonged exposure to certain environmental risk factors.

Early detection not only improves treatment options but also enhances quality of life and survival. If symptoms persist for more than two weeks, consult a cancer specialist promptly.

FAQ Friday: How Often Should I Get a Mammogram? | Dr. Abhinav Narwariya

A mammogram is one of the most effective screening tests for the early detection of breast cancer, often identifying changes before symptoms develop.

General recommendations:
✔ Women at average risk should discuss starting regular mammograms from age 40 with their doctor.
✔ Women with a strong family history of breast cancer, BRCA gene mutations, or other high-risk factors may need to begin screening earlier and more frequently.

There is no single schedule that fits everyone. The right screening plan depends on your age, family history, personal medical history, and overall risk.

If you notice a breast lump, ni**le discharge, skin changes, or persistent breast pain, don’t wait for your next screening—seek medical evaluation promptly.

Early detection saves lives and provides the best chance for successful treatment.

Not every lump is cancer—but every persistent lump deserves evaluation.

A lump or swelling can have many causes, and most are not cancerous. However, any new, persistent, enlarging, or painless lump should be assessed by a specialist without unnecessary delay. Early evaluation helps rule out serious conditions and, if needed, enables timely treatment.

If you notice a lump in the breast, neck, armpit, groin, or any other part of the body, don’t ignore it. A proper clinical examination and appropriate investigations can provide the right diagnosis and peace of mind.
