Venu Eye Institute Venu Eye Institute is engaged in providing preventive, curative and rehabilitative eye care. Late Dr. R.K. It organizes 250 eye screening camps.

Four decades ago a philanthropist and a great visionary laid the seed of what is today known as Venu Eye Institute & Research Centre. Seth, an eminent ophthalmologist, and Founder of the Venu Charitable Society realized the limitation of private practice. His desire to spread its reach to the needy, overarching social and economic hurdles, created Venu. Venu pioneered a unique 3-tier service delivery network, in response to the felt need of the patient, to ensure quality eye care services reach the poor and needy in the rural areas. It has a tertiary Base Referral & Teaching Hospital in Delhi, 5 rural secondary level Satellite Hospitals and 9 primary level Vision Centres in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. Since its inception, Venu has treated 7.9 million patients and operated 0.48 million.
50% of patients are treated free. Income generated from the 50% paying patients subsidize the 50% free patients. Venu is a university recognized teaching & training centre for postgraduate and undergraduate teaching programmes for Doctors and Optometrists. It is on the panel of over 150 Government and Public Sector Undertakings for eye health of their employees
It is an ISO 9001:2015 certified eye hospital.

In this video, Dr. Abhishek Dagar of Venu Eye Institute explains how diabetes can affect our eyes, and why an annual eye check-up matters for every person living with diabetes.

Our eye works like a camera. The lens sits at the front, and the retina at the back is the film on which the image forms. Diabetes can affect both.

✔️ The lens - people with diabetes often develop cataract earlier. The lens turns cloudy, light cannot pass through it properly, and vision becomes blurred.
✔️ The retina - diabetes is a disease of the blood vessels. The tiny blood vessels inside the eye can start to leak, and that damages the retina. This is diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy often shows no symptoms in its early stages, and it can cause irreversible blindness if it is not treated in time.

The good news?

Early changes can be picked up well before vision is affected. This needs an examination at a specialised eye centre, by ophthalmologists trained in these techniques.

If you or someone in your family has diabetes, an eye check-up once a year is the simplest way to protect your sight.

Remembering Lord Jeffrey Archer

Some memories stay with you forever.

On 12 September 2013, Venu Eye Institute held a fundraising evening in London to raise support for our free cataract project. That evening, Lord Jeffrey Archer took the auctioneer’s hammer and gave his time and spirit generously to our cause.

He did it for a friend, the late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, former Indian cricketer and Venu Eye Institute’s Brand Ambassador. Their friendship brought him to that room, and his generosity helped us continue our work of restoring sight to those who could not afford it.

Today, as we mourn the passing of Lord Jeffrey Archer on 5 October 2026, aged 86, we remember him not only as the celebrated storyteller known to millions around the world, but as the warm and generous friend who stood with us that evening in London.

For Venu Eye Institute, he will always be remembered through that moment: the auctioneer’s hammer in his hand, his affection for a dear friend, and his generosity towards a cause that meant so much to us.

Thank you, Lord Archer, for that evening, for your friendship, and for helping us bring the gift of sight to those in need.

Ever noticed a young child who plays happily all day, then goes quiet and clingy once the sun sets?

It is easy to call it fear of the dark. Sometimes it is night blindness: trouble seeing in dim light. One well-known cause is low vitamin A, and it is seen mostly in children aged 1 to 5. The eyes can look completely normal at this stage, so the change in behaviour after dark is often the only clue.

Low vitamin A is more likely in children with:
✔️ A diet low in vegetables, fruit, milk and eggs
✔️ Repeated diarrhoea
✔️ Measles
✔️ Undernutrition

The good news?

Night blindness linked to low vitamin A usually improves with treatment when caught early. Night blindness can have other causes too, so an eye examination is needed. At Venu Eye Institute, our team examines the child and advises treatment based on what we find.

Vitamin A syrup or supplements should be given only as advised by a doctor or health centre.

Ever thought that if one eye suddenly stops seeing, and there is no pain, it can wait till morning?

It can’t. Sudden, painless loss of vision in one eye can be a retinal occlusion - a block in a blood vessel of the retina.

In some people the block is in an artery. In others it is in a vein. With an artery block, doctors have only a few hours to act. With a vein block, treatment should begin within a few weeks.

You cannot tell at home which one it is.

In this video, Dr. Wangchuk Doma of Venu Eye Institute explains what a lazy eye is, why it happens, and why early treatment matters so much for children.

A lazy eye, also called amblyopia, is when vision does not develop properly, usually in one eye and sometimes in both. It has several causes, and the treatment depends on which one our team finds:

✔️ The child needs glasses in one or both eyes - often, wearing glasses is the treatment
✔️ One eye stays weaker than the other even with glasses - patching (occlusion therapy) may be advised
✔️ The child has a squint - treatment depends on the cause of the squint

Treating a lazy eye at an early age is very important. Visual maturity sets in at around the age of eight, and after that, treatment becomes more and more difficult.

Lazy eye often goes undetected, because a child’s eyes can look completely normal. That is why we ask parents to bring their children in for regular eye check-ups, even when nothing seems wrong.

On 2 October 1939, Dr. R.K. Seth was born. By 1980, he was a well-known Delhi ophthalmologist, with 15 years of practice and clinics across the city.

Then he left it all behind. He opened the first door of Venu Eye Institute in a small space in South Delhi, for people who could never afford eye care.

He passed away in 1996, at just 56. But what he started never stopped growing. Today, Venu Eye Institute stands on a 2.5-acre campus in Sheikh Sarai and has treated over 85 lakh patients, 65 lakh of them free or at subsidised rates.

Happy 87th birthday, Dr. Seth. Every eye we treat carries your vision. 🙏

Children usually adapt to whatever they see. If their vision has always been blurry, they assume that’s normal. Even when they do sense something is off, they often can’t understand it well enough to tell their parents.

Signs parents can watch for:
✔️ One eye drifting or turning inward or outward
✔️ Trouble focusing on tasks
✔️ Difficulty copying from the board, especially from the back of the class
✔️ Sitting very close to the TV when watching something

In this video, Dr. Abhishek Dagar of Venu Eye Institute explains what floaters and flashes can mean.

The tiny black dots or cobweb-like threads drifting across your vision are called floaters. The inside of your eye is filled with a clear jelly, and sometimes small particles form in it. What you see is their shadow falling on the retina.

Some people also see brief flashes of light at the edge of their vision. This can happen when the retina gets stretched, and it is more common in people with a high minus number (very nearsighted).

You are at higher risk if you:
✔️ Have a high minus number, stronger than -5
✔️ Notice floaters or flashes that keep coming back

Seek immediate care if you experience:
🔸 A sudden shower of new floaters
🔸 New flashes of light
🔸 A shadow or curtain moving across your vision

Ever been told you need cataract surgery, and you also live with diabetes?

Cataract surgery works on the front of the eye. The clouded natural lens is removed and a clear artificial lens takes its place, and for most people that brings a real improvement in vision.

But there is a second structure further back. The retina lines the inside wall of the eye, and the picture you see is formed on it. Diabetes affects the blood vessels of the retina, and that is what doctors call diabetic retinopathy.

Replacing the lens does not treat the retina. And retinal damage that has already happened does not fully recover.
