Epilepsy in the Elderly: It's More Common Than You Think
As India’s population ages, epilepsy is increasingly affecting our seniors. While many associate it with younger people, new-onset epilepsy often peaks after 60–65 years — frequently linked to stroke, dementia, hypertension, or metabolic changes.
Seizures in older adults can be subtle: brief confusion, memory lapses, staring spells, or unexplained falls — easily mistaken for normal aging or other conditions.
Key Messages:
Timely diagnosis saves independence & improves quality of life
Treatment is effective but needs careful management with other medications
Family support and awareness are crucial
At Indian Epilepsy Association, we’re here to spread awareness, reduce stigma, and support elderly patients & caregivers across India. If you or a loved one is experiencing unusual symptoms, don’t ignore them — seek specialist help.
