Stress isn't only about what happens to us.

It is also about who is experiencing it.

Ayurveda begins with understanding Prakriti—your natural constitution. Only then can you recognise Vikriti—the imbalance that has moved you away from that natural state.

Without knowing your baseline, every reaction feels like your personality.

Instead of identifying with every thought or emotion, you begin to observe them.

A few Ayurvedic reflections to practice:

• Know your Prakriti: Your constitution becomes the reference point for recognising when you've moved away from balance

• Recognise your Vikriti: Restlessness, irritability or emotional heaviness are signals to understand, not identities to hold onto

• Observe before reacting: Every emotion is information. Notice its quality before allowing it to become your response

• Learn the tools to understand yourself better to deal with imbalances that affect your mental health

Ever notice how you lose your appetite the moment you're anxious? That's not "just nerves."

We tend to treat the gut and the mind as two separate stories: one is digestion, the other is emotion. But they were never separate to begin with. Something happening in your gut, right now, could be quietly shaping how you feel today, your energy, your mood, even your patience. And it works the other way too, whatever you're carrying emotionally doesn't stay in your head, it moves through your body, starting with your gut.

This is also why, as Ayurvedic practitioners, we ask so many questions about digestion, sleep, and appetite before we even begin discussing someone's emotional wellbeing. In Ayurveda, these have never been separate conversations. They are all expressions of the same underlying state of balance or imbalance.

🌱 A gut that's constantly unsettled rarely comes with a calm, settled mind
🍽️ Long before "gut health" was a wellness trend, this connection was already central to how Ayurveda approaches emotional wellbeing
🧘 Which is also why treatment so often starts with the body, not with talking things through

Anxiety, stress, and an overactive mind. Ayurveda has a beautiful perspective on why this happens.

In Ayurveda, anxiety, fear, restlessness, and racing thoughts are often signs of an aggravated Vata dosha.

And one of the primary ways to calm Vata is through Sneha.

Sneha is usually translated as oil.

This is why Ayurvedic therapies such as Abhyangam (warm oil massage) are so deeply nourishing for the nervous system.

But Sneha has another beautiful meaning.

It also means love, affection, tenderness, and loving touch.

Perhaps this is why a warm hug can soften a panic attack.

Why placing a gentle hand on someone's forehead can bring comfort.

Why caring touch helps us feel safe again.

Thousands of years ago, Ayurveda recognised something we often forget today:

Sometimes the nervous system doesn't need more information.

It needs more warmth.

More connection.

More Sneha. 💛

This is just one example of how Ayurveda understands mental health in a way that goes far beyond symptom management.

Mental health is not one-size-fits-all

In Ayurveda, the mind, breath, and body are deeply connected.

This is why the same breathing practice is not recommended for everyone.

Someone with anxiety and an overactive mind needs a different approach from someone experiencing anger, frustration, or emotional heaviness.

For example:

🌬️ Anuloma Viloma is often recommended to calm an aggravated Vata mind, helping to reduce anxiety, restlessness, and overthinking.

❄️ Sheetali Pranayama helps cool an aggravated Pitta mind, supporting those experiencing irritability, frustration, or anger.

🔥 Kapalabhati can help stimulate an aggravated Kapha state, bringing more clarity and energy when the mind feels dull, heavy, or unmotivated.

This is why Ayurveda begins by understanding you.

Your constitution (Prakriti) and your current imbalance (Vikriti) help determine which practices are most supportive for your body and mind.

Without that understanding, even beneficial practices may not be the right choice for the individual.

This is exactly what we'll explore in our next Ayurveda Learning Session with Dr. Arun Sharma.

If you are seeing this post, chances are you are in a country facing a heatwave right now.

And the honest truth is that most of what modern wellness tells you to do in the heat, cold showers, iced drinks, pushing through your usual routine, actually works against the body rather than with it.

Ayurveda's approach to summer is almost the opposite of what most people expect.

Here is what most people do not know about the summer body:

- Cold drinks feel right but force the body to generate more internal heat to compensate. You end up hotter, not cooler
- The same digestion that handled heavy meals easily in winter is running at half capacity right now
- Misri or rock sugar actually cools the body. Jaggery heats it. The sweetener is not just about taste; it is medicine
- Exhaustion in summer does not stay in summer.

Whatever Vata builds up now aggravates when the monsoon arrives, showing up as joint pain, anxiety and low energy in the rainy season.

Summer is the only season Ayurveda recommends a short daytime rest. Not laziness. Correct seasonal practice
