Alternative medicine practitioners heavily promote the idea that every disease has a single, identifiable root cause that can be permanently fixed — implying conventional medicine only "suppresses symptoms." This narrative resonates emotionally with patients but is a gross oversimplification of how disease actually works.
Why It's Not Always Possible
Many chronic diseases simply don't have one fixable root cause:
Type 1 Diabetes — autoimmune destruction of beta cells is irreversible; insulin is not symptom-suppression, it's survival
Type 2 Diabetes — has multiple root causes (genetics, adiposity, sedentary lifestyle, gut microbiome, beta-cell exhaustion) — you can't "cure" genetics
Hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's) — once significant thyroid tissue is destroyed, thyroxine replacement is permanent, not a "patch"
Genetic disorders (e.g., congenital adrenal hyperplasia) — the root cause is in DNA; no herb reverses that
Advanced complications (nephropathy, retinopathy) — structural damage cannot be "root-caused" away
Alternative medicine's evidence base relies on testimonials and anecdotes, not reproducible clinical trials, making sweeping "root cause cure" claims scientifically unethical.
