Osteoporosis is often called a "silent disease" because it rarely causes symptoms until significant bone loss has occurred or a fracture happens. The most common indicators include unexpected broken bones (especially in the hip, wrist, or spine) from minor falls, chronic back pain from collapsed vertebrae, a loss of height over time, and a stooped or hunched posture (kyphosis).

Key Symptoms and Early Warning Signs:

Fractures from Minor Incidents: Breaking a bone from a fall that wouldn't normally cause a break, or even from minor activities like bending or coughing.
Chronic Back Pain: Caused by fractured or collapsed vertebrae in the spine.
Loss of Height: Gradual loss of height (usually 1 inch or more) over time.
Stooped Posture: Developing a hunched back (dowager's hump).
Weakened Grip Strength: Reduced muscle strength in the hands, which can be an early indicator of lower bone density.
Brittle Nails: Nails that break or chip easily.
Receding Gums: Bone loss in the jaw, which can cause gums to recede.
