Report on Infection Control Training for First year Postgraduate students

An Infection Control Training Programme was conducted for the first-year postgraduate students by the Hospital Infection Control Team on 29th July 2026. The aim of this training was to familiarize the students with the fundamental principles and practices of infection prevention and control in healthcare settings. The trainers were Dr Dechen C. Tsering, Professor, Dept. of Microbiology and Member Secretary, HICC and Dr. Rekha Sharma, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Microbiology and Member, HICC.

The training covered the following key topics:

Hand Hygiene: The importance of hand hygiene in preventing the transmission of infections was emphasized. Students were introduced to the WHO’s “Five Moments of Hand Hygiene “The correct technique of hand hygiene was also demonstrated.

Biomedical Waste Management: Participants were oriented to the principle of biomedical waste segregation, colour coded waste disposal, safe handling of biomedical waste and compliance with the Biomedical waste management rules.

Needle stick injury management: The session highlighted the strategies to prevent needlestick and sharp injuries, safe handling and disposal of sharps, immediate first aid measures, timely reporting and post exposure prophylaxis protocols.

Antimicrobial Stewardship: Students were introduced to the concept of antimicrobial stewardship, including the rational use of antibiotics, prevention of antimicrobial resistance, appropriate specimen collection before initiating antimicrobial therapy.

The training included interactive discussions and demonstrations. Pre and Post tests were also conducted. The training was well received by the participants.
