ROTARY CLUB OF GANGTOK MARKS 58 YEARS OF SERVICE WITH THE OFFICIAL VISIT OF DISTRICT GOVERNOR

Gangtok, 22nd August: The Rotary Club of Gangtok had the privilege of welcoming District Governor (2026–2027) Rtn. Dr. Asim Kanti Adhikary and Assistant Governor Rtn. Sheila Rai Fudong of Rotary International District 3240 on their Official Club Visit to the Rotary Club of Gangtok.

The visit was an important occasion for the Club to review its activities, share its priorities for the Rotary year 2026–27, and seek the guidance and encouragement of the District leadership in further strengthening Rotary’s service to the community.

District Governor Rtn. Dr. Asim Kanti Adhikary and Assistant Governor Rtn. Sheila Rai Fudong were warmly received by Club President Rtn. Dr. Noorjahan Khatoon, Secretary Rtn. Sherab Choden Bhutia, members of the Board and fellow Rotarians.

During the formal meeting, President Rtn. Dr. Noorjahan Khatoon presented an overview of the Club’s ongoing and proposed activities, with emphasis on meaningful community service, membership engagement, contributions to The Rotary Foundation, environmental responsibility, youth involvement and projects capable of creating a sustainable impact. She reaffirmed the Club’s commitment to carrying its proud legacy forward with renewed energy and purpose.

She said:
“For us, Rotary is not only about the number of activities we undertake, but about the lives we are able to touch. As we move forward, our endeavour will be to serve with compassion, involve more people, strengthen fellowship and create initiatives that leave a lasting impact on our community.”

Addressing the members, District Governor Rtn. Dr. Asim Kanti Adhikary appreciated the efforts of the Rotary Club of Gangtok and encouraged the members to continue working with unity, compassion and a clear sense of purpose. He emphasised that Rotary becomes truly meaningful when fellowship is transformed into service, and service results in a visible and lasting difference in people’s lives.

He commended the Rotary Club of Gangtok for its strong performance and active presence at the District level. His appreciation was a proud moment for the Club and its members, reaffirming the impact of their collective efforts and the Club’s continuing contribution to the larger Rotary movement.

He also encouraged the Club to think bigger and explore District and Foundation funding opportunities for well-planned, sustainable and high-impact service projects. He emphasised the importance of developing projects around genuine community needs, with clear objectives and measurable outcomes, so that Rotary resources can be effectively leveraged to create a greater and more lasting impact.

Adding further pride and significance to the occasion, three new members were inducted into the Rotary family — Rtn. Jamyang Dorjee Lama, Rtn. Sonam Ongmu Tamang and Mrs. Angila Tshering Bhutia, Sr. Lecturer, ATTC. Their induction marked not only the growth of the Club’s membership but also the arrival of fresh energy, perspectives and enthusiasm.

Welcoming three new Rotarians during the Official Club Visit was especially meaningful as the Club celebrates 58 years of its proud legacy. Their joining the Rotary family symbolises the continuity of that legacy and the Club’s commitment to building a stronger and more vibrant future through Service Above Self.

The presence of Assistant Governor Rtn. Sheila Rai Fudong added further significance to the occasion, strengthening the bond between the Club and District leadership and providing an opportunity for meaningful interaction, fellowship and exchange of ideas. In her address, she emphasised the importance of every member’s contribution to the larger vision of Rotary and its commitment to serving the community. She appreciated the contributions of the members and urged them to come together to create a greater and more meaningful impact on society. She also highlighted the importance of women’s empowerment and encouraged greater participation and leadership by women in Rotary initiatives.

The celebration was warmly enriched by the presence of the Presidents of the Inner Wheel Club of Gangtok and Inner Wheel Club Gangtok Orchid, along with the Secretary and Treasurer of the Rotaract Club of SRM University Sikkim, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Gangtok, and spouses of members of the Rotary Club of Gangtok, who extended their heartfelt wishes to the District Governor and the Club. Their participation reflected the fellowship, togetherness and shared spirit of service that unite the larger Rotary family.
The interaction also provided members with an opportunity to discuss the Club’s future plans, challenges and areas where support from the District could further strengthen its initiatives.

The occasion became even more memorable with the celebration of the 58th Charter Day of the Rotary Club of Gangtok, marked by a ceremonial cake cutting. The celebration was a moment to honour the Club’s long journey of fellowship and service and to remember the contributions of generations of Rotarians who have helped build and strengthen its proud legacy.

The programme concluded with fellowship and dinner, further strengthening the spirit of friendship, camaraderie and shared commitment among the members.

The Official Club Visit served not merely as a review of the Club’s work, but as a renewed call to action — to serve better, grow together and Create Lasting Impact.

Rotary Club of Gangtok Welcomes Inspiring Cyclist Rtn. Pappu Ram Choudhary on His Nationwide "Shakti Sankalp Safar"

Gangtok, July 13: The Rotary Club of Gangtok welcomed Rtn. Pappu Ram Choudhary of the Rotary Club of Nagaur, Rajasthan (RID 3053), Founder of the Oxyhunger Foundation and widely known as "The Oxygen Man of India," during his visit to Sikkim as part of his nationwide solo cycling expedition, "Shakti Sankalp Safar."
The visit was marked by a warm fellowship meeting and an exchange of club flags, symbolizing Rotary's enduring spirit of friendship, service, and unity.

Rtn. Choudhary is undertaking an extraordinary 60,000-kilometre solo cycling expedition across India with the objective of creating nationwide awareness about a Drug-Free India, healthy and fit lifestyles, and environmental conservation. To date, he has covered more than 44,000 kilometres across 33 States and Union Territories and has inspired the planting of over 35,000 trees through the Oxyhunger Foundation. Sikkim marks the final state of the first phase of this remarkable national mission.

Speaking about his journey, Rtn. Choudhary said, "The core motive of the 'Shakti Sankalp Safar' is rooted in a deep responsibility towards our nation's future. This expedition is my commitment to creating a Drug-Free Society, encouraging a healthy and fit lifestyle among our youth, and combating climate change through large-scale tree plantation. It is not merely a cycling expedition, but a lifelong mission to build a healthier, greener, and self-reliant India, culminating in my next dream—Mission Mount Everest 2027."

Reflecting on his experiences, he added that cycling across India's diverse landscapes—from snow-covered mountain passes to scorching plains—has reinforced his belief in the country's unity and resilience. He observed that interactions with young people affected by substance abuse strengthened his resolve, while the unwavering encouragement received from local communities, government authorities, and the global Rotary family has been his greatest source of inspiration. He remarked that the journey demonstrates how a single individual driven by a noble national cause can inspire collective action across the country.

President of the Rotary Club of Gangtok, Rtn. Dr. Noorjahan Khatoon, congratulated Rtn. Choudhary on his extraordinary dedication and applauded his tireless efforts in promoting social awareness, physical fitness, environmental responsibility, and nation-building. She observed that his inspiring journey reflects Rotary's ideals of Service Above Self and serves as a powerful reminder that one individual's determination can positively influence countless lives.

Vocational Excellence Awards 2026 – Celebrating Chartered Accountants' Day & Doctors' Day

Gangtok, 3 July 2026: The Rotary Club of Gangtok celebrated Chartered Accountants' Day and Doctors' Day by conferring the Vocational Excellence Awards 2026 on four distinguished professionals whose exemplary careers have significantly contributed to the development of Sikkim and upheld the highest standards of professional excellence, ethics and service.
The awards were presented during a special ceremony held on 3 July 2026 at the iconic Hotel Elgin Nor-Khill, Gangtok, in the presence of Rotarians, dignitaries, professionals and invited guests.

The Vocational Excellence Awards are among Rotary's highest recognitions at the club level. They honour individuals who have distinguished themselves through outstanding professional achievement while exemplifying integrity, ethical conduct and service to society. Rooted in Rotary's Avenue of Vocational Service, the awards reaffirm the belief that every profession provides an opportunity to serve humanity and create meaningful change.

In keeping with Rotary International's 2026–27 theme, "Creating Lasting Impact," the Rotary Club of Gangtok selected four eminent personalities whose lifelong dedication and commitment have left an enduring impact on their professions and the people of Sikkim.

CA. Nehru Marda
One of Sikkim's senior-most practising Chartered Accountants, CA. Nehru Marda has nearly four decades of distinguished professional experience. In 1987, he established N. Marda & Associates, the oldest continuously practising Chartered Accountancy firm in Gangtok. Throughout his illustrious career, he has been closely associated with the audit and financial management of numerous Government Departments, Public Sector Undertakings, Government schemes, educational institutions, corporate organisations, pharmaceutical companies, NGOs, societies, religious institutions and other organisations. His unwavering commitment to professional ethics, financial discipline and excellence has earned him immense respect within the profession and has contributed significantly to strengthening financial governance in Sikkim.

CA. Bhikham Chand Periwal
A practising Chartered Accountant since 1997, CA. Bhikham Chand Periwal is a dual-qualified Chartered Accountant and law graduate (LL.B.) with over 25 years of professional experience. He specialises in Internal Audit and Control Systems and holds prestigious ICAI certifications in Information Systems Audit (DISA), Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and Forensic Audit & Fraud Detection (FAFD). His expertise in governance, auditing, compliance and financial transparency has benefited numerous organisations. A respected professional and an active member of the Rotary Club of Gangtok, he has consistently demonstrated Rotary's ideals of ethical leadership, integrity and service.

Dr. Anusha Lama
An alumna of the prestigious Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, Dr. Anusha Lama began her medical career in 1992 as a Medical Officer at STNM Hospital before serving at Yuksam Primary Health Centre. She later served as District Medical Superintendent and subsequently as Chief Medical Officer at Gyalshing District Hospital, where she made significant contributions to strengthening healthcare delivery and administration. During the later phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, she also served as the State Surveillance Officer under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). She retired in 2026 as Principal Director, Health Services-cum-Mission Director, National Health Mission (NHM), Sikkim. Her distinguished career reflects an unwavering commitment to compassionate healthcare, public health leadership and the welfare of the people of Sikkim.

Dr. Deokinandan Joshi
Dr. Deokinandan Joshi completed his schooling at Sir Tashi Namgyal Higher Secondary School, Gangtok, pursued his pre-medical studies at Banaras Hindu University, and obtained his MBBS degree from VSS Medical College, Sambalpur, in 1986. He joined the Government of Sikkim as a Medical Officer in 1987, initially serving at Sombaria Primary Health Centre before dedicating himself to healthcare in some of the State's remotest villages, including Kongri, Gangyap, Karjee and Labdang, as Medical Officer-in-Charge of Tashiding PHC. His commitment to providing quality medical care in remote and underserved areas earned him the admiration of the communities he served. He presently continues serving society through his private medical practice in Gangtok, where he remains a trusted and respected physician.

Speaking on the occasion, Rtn. Dr. Noor Jahan Khatoon, President (2026–2027) of the Rotary Club of Gangtok, said that the Vocational Excellence Awards are a tribute to professionals who exemplify the highest standards of competence, integrity and service. She noted that the four awardees have not only achieved distinction in their respective fields but have also dedicated their knowledge, skills and experience to improving the lives of others.
