March is colorectal cancer (CRC) awareness month.
Did you know that you could prevent CRC?
CRC occurs because food stays too long in our GI tract. If you are not having a bowel movement every day or at least 6 of 7 days per week, you have an increased risk of CRC. Toxins in your system cause inflammation and then cancer. If you are eating the right food and drinking the right amount of water, you will keep food moving through your GI tract instead of sitting there building up toxins in your body.
"Keep your mind full and your bowels empty"
The prevention of CRC is well-known and evidence-based:
1. Stop Smoking
2. Keep your alcohol intake to one drink per day for women and 2 drinks per day for men (5 oz of wine, 12 oz of beer, or 1.5 oz of liquor)
3. Vit D levels must be 60-80 ngm/mL
4. Eat 3 cups of fresh veggies and 1-2 pieces of fresh fruit every day
5. Eat for fiber (flaxseed, quinoa, fresh fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds, beans) Do not take fiber supplements...you need real food fiber.
6. avoid processed meat and foods
7. drink 1/2 of your body weight in water daily
8. 30 minutes of physical activity every day (can be in 5 or 10-minute increments). walking or any physical activity pushes food through your system
