Who do we automatically believe? Why does English make someone sound more intelligent in India? Epistemic injustice does not always look like open discrimination. it looks like a parent saying, “What do you know? You are still a child.” sometimes it is a domestic worker whose account of what happened in a household is automatically treated as less credible than the employer’s. Sometimes it is a student from a marginalised cast entering an academic space and having their competence question before their actual work is assessed. Research has specifically discussed cast discrimination as affecting whose perspectives and contributions are treated as legitimate knowledge.
