**Why Does Shoulder Pain Happen After Laparoscopic Surgery? 🤔**

Many patients are surprised to feel **shoulder pain after laparoscopy**, even though the surgery is performed in the abdomen. This is called **referred shoulder pain** and is most commonly caused by the **carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas** used to create space during laparoscopic surgery. The gas can temporarily irritate the diaphragm, and because the diaphragm and shoulder share the **phrenic nerve (C3–C5)** pathway, the brain interprets the sensation as shoulder pain.

The good news? This discomfort is **temporary** and usually improves as the remaining gas is absorbed by the body. Early mobilization, deep breathing exercises, proper pain management, and following your surgeon’s advice can help reduce symptoms.

Understanding the science behind postoperative shoulder pain can help reassure patients and improve recovery expectations.

While both procedures are performed to remove fibroids, the right approach depends on the size, number, and location of the fibroid.
