What can increase the risk of blood cancer? ๐ฉธ
Blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma usually do not have one single identifiable cause. In many patients, several biological and environmental factors may contribute to risk.
Some recognized risk factors include:
๐งฌ Genetic factors โ certain inherited conditions or acquired gene changes can increase risk in some people
โข๏ธ Environmental exposure โ specific chemicals or high levels of radiation may be associated with certain blood cancers
๐ก๏ธ Immune system conditions โ some immune disorders or long-term immune suppression can influence risk
๐ญ Smoking โ linked with an increased risk of some forms of leukemia
๐ค Age โ the risk of several blood cancers increases with age
Having a risk factor does not mean that someone will develop blood cancer. Many patients are diagnosed without any obvious risk factor.
Persistent fatigue, unexplained fever, recurrent infections, unusual bruising or bleeding, swollen lymph nodes, unexplained weight loss or abnormal blood tests deserve proper medical evaluation.
