Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly targets the hair follicle. This can cause sudden, smooth patches of hair loss on the scalp, beard, eyebrows, eyelashes or other areas of the body.

When should your child first see an orthodontist?

I recommend an orthodontic check-up around age 6, when the first permanent teeth are starting to come in. An early assessment can identify developing bite or jaw problems, as well as habits such as thumb sucking and mouth breathing that may affect jaw development and tooth alignment.

A second orthodontic check-up by around age 10 is also important, as this is a key stage of growth when certain problems, such as narrow jaws or significant crowding, may benefit from early intervention.

The goal is to identify problems early, so that if treatment is needed, the timing is right.

If your child is around 6–10 years old, an orthodontic assessment can help you understand how their teeth and jaws are developing.
