We often romanticise being “the one who feels deeply.”
But there’s a difference between empathy and emotional over-involvement.
Empathy allows you to understand someone’s experience.
It doesn’t require you to absorb it, fix it, or lose yourself in it.
When boundaries are unclear, care can start to look like:
– over-functioning
– over-extending
– people-pleasing
– emotional exhaustion
And over time, this doesn’t just impact relationships—
It impacts your sense of self.
Boundaries aren’t about becoming distant or less caring.
They’re what allow you to stay present, connected, and intact.
If this is something you’re recognising in yourself,
It’s often a call for deeper work—not just behavioural, but relational.

📍 Therapy can help you understand where this pattern comes from and how to shift it—without losing your capacity for empathy.
Save this if it resonated.
Share it with someone who might need the distinction.
