Does a numb skin patch mean leprosy?

Not always—but a pale or reddish patch with reduced sensation should be medically examined.

Leprosy, also called Hansen disease, can affect the skin and peripheral nerves. Warning signs may include:

• A pale or reddish skin patch with reduced sensation
• Numbness or loss of feeling
• Weakness in a hand or foot

Leprosy is curable with multidrug therapy. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent disability. It also does not spread through ordinary casual contact.

There should be no shame in seeking medical care.
