Officials from the JICA-supported Assam Health System Strengthening Project (AHSSP) recently inspected the ongoing construction of the new Super Specialty Wings at Jorhat Medical College & Hospital and Tezpur Medical College & Hospital. Accompanied by key stakeholders from the PIU, PWD, PMC, EPC contractors , the PMU leadership reviewed the progress of construction, assessed key project milestones, and evaluated the overall development of the sites. One day Workshop on Environment and Social Safeguard Compliances under the ASSIST Project was held today with the objective of disseminating the message on why compliance is essential at hospital construction sites to ensure that construction activities are carried out safely and responsibly, minimizing environmental impacts, protecting workers and communities, and safeguarding the health, safety, and well-being of patients and surrounding stakeholders. The workshop was addressed by Dr. Siddharth Singh, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, M**D, Government of Assam, cm Project Director, AHIDMS, and was attended by Project Managers, EHS Officers and Site Engineers from PCCMC and EPC contractors engaged at the 9 District Hospital construction sites, along with PMCC Site Engineers involved in Repair & Renovation works in various health facilities . The day-long session featured insightful presentations on GRIHA compliance, Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF), Environmental and Social Standards (ESS), C-ESMP implementation, legal and regulatory compliance, linkages with Gender-Based Violence (GBV) service providers, and key requirements of ISO 45001:2018. The workshop also showcased good practices and initiatives undertaken at the 9 District Hospital construction sites under the ASSIST Project. The workshop reaffirmed the ASSIST Project’s commitment to responsible and sustainable infrastructure development, with a focus on building safer, greener and more resilient healthcare facilities while contributing to the transformation of Assam’s health sector.

The 2nd Joint Coordination Committee Meeting under the JICA Technical Cooperation Project (TCP) was held today under the chairmanship of Dr. Siddharth Singh, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, Medical Education & Research Department (M**D) and Project Director, AHIDMS. The meeting was attended by Mr. Tomohiro Arima, Senior Representative, JICA India, Ms. Aditi Puri, Addl. Chief Development specialist, Mr. Hiroshi Abo, Team Leader, TCP alongwith other delegates from JICA India and Japan.
The TCP aims to improve the quality of health and medical services in Assam through handholding support in key areas, including Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), stock management, and hospital management and governance at Nalbari and Barpeta Medical College & Hospital.
Mrs. Loni Barpatra Gohain, ACS, Joint Secretary, M**D-cum-Joint Project Director, AHIDMS; Dr. A.C. Baishya, Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent, Nalbari Medical College & Hospital; and Dr. Ramen Talukdar, Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent, Barpeta Medical College & Hospital, were also present, along with senior officials from M**D, AHSSP and AHIDMS.
The meeting reviewed the progress and key achievements under the TCP over the past year and discussed and approved the work plan for the upcoming project activities. The meeting also deliberated on the roadmap for expanding the project’s interventions to additional Medical Colleges & Hospitals in Assam, with a view to further strengthening the quality and efficiency of healthcare services across the State.

The 6th Implementation Support Mission (ISM) by the for the ASSIST Project was held from 17–19 August 2026 at the AHIDMS office. As part of the mission, detailed discussions on the progress of the Civil Works component were held on 13–14 August 2026, with a focus on reviewing the status of ongoing works, assessing key implementation challenges, and identifying priority actions and the way forward.

The three-day mission comprised detailed discussions on project progress and key performance indicators, complemented by presentations from various organisations on Nursing Education and Workforce Development Solutions in Assam. The mission concluded with a debriefing session with the Project Director, focusing on key achievements and priority actions to be undertaken.
