Fibroadenoma: What Does It Really Mean?
If you’ve had a breast ultrasound or mammogram and your report says “Fibroadenoma,” it’s completely understandable to feel worried. 😟
One of the most common questions I hear is:
“Doctor, will this become cancer later?”
👉 The good news is — most fibroadenomas are not cancerous ❤️
Here’s what you should know 👇
🔹 What is a fibroadenoma?
A fibroadenoma is a solid, non-cancerous breast lump made up of glandular and fibrous tissue.
🔹 Who commonly gets them?
They are particularly common in younger women, especially during the reproductive years.
Hormonal changes can influence their size and tenderness.
🔹 How does it usually feel?
A typical fibroadenoma may feel like a smooth, firm, well-defined lump that can move slightly under the skin. Some women may have no symptoms at all and discover it only during an ultrasound or examination.
🔹 Can it become cancer?
✨ Most fibroadenomas do not turn into breast cancer.
However, the overall assessment depends on the type of fibroadenoma, your age, examination and imaging findings.
🔹 Does every fibroadenoma need surgery?
❌ No. Not every fibroadenoma needs to be removed.
If it is small, stable and has typical benign features, your doctor may recommend observation and follow-up rather than surgery.
🔹 When might further evaluation be needed?
Your doctor may recommend a biopsy or, in selected situations, removal if:
⚠️ The lump is rapidly increasing in size
⚠️ The imaging appearance is not clearly benign
⚠️ The lump is large or causing significant discomfort
⚠️ There is a mismatch between examination and imaging findings
⚠️ Your age or other risk factors make further evaluation appropriate
A breast lump should not be self-diagnosed as a fibroadenoma just because it feels smooth or mobile.
So, if your report says “Fibroadenoma”…
DON’T PANIC.But also DON’T IGNORE IT.
Understand what your scan actually shows, discuss whether you need follow-up or further testing, and make the decision together with your doctor. 👩⚕️❤️
