During stapes surgery for otosclerosis, we replace the fixed bone in the middle ear with a tiny micro-prosthesis. Because this is done under local anesthesia, the patient is awake, talking to us, and experiencing immediate hearing improvement before the procedure even ends!

Every implant surgeon and audiologist I have learned from
was somewhere in that hall.

And I stood at the podium to talk about the BEEP study.
About a childโ€™s brain telling us, in its own voice, that sound has arrived.

I shared that stage with Dr. Aniket Saoji, Director of the Cochlear Implant Program at Mayo Clinic, USA, and Mr. Fernando Chapa, Vice President of Research and Development, Advanced Bionics.

And the two who ran the show? Aditya and Sanvi.
Both cochlear implant recipients. Both moderating a national symposium. That was the moment my eyes went wet.

9 new beginnings.
This morning, on Independence Day, our hospital filled up with small hands holding tricolour flags โ€” and heads still wrapped from surgery.
Every one of these children was born into silence.

Today, they celebrate a different kind of freedom.

We were honoured to have Mr. BVR Ramakrishna, Strategic Business Unit Head, Sun Pharma, hand over the cochlear implant kits to each child. A leader from medicine, placing the gift of sound directly into a parentโ€™s hands.

Freedom is not only a date on the calendar.
Sometimes it is a child turning towards her motherโ€™s voice for the first time.
