Did you know your bones are also a blood-cell factory?
Your bones do much more than support your body. Inside the bone marrow, special stem cells continuously produce new red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cells typically live for around 120 days before being replaced, while your body produces millions of new blood cells every second to keep up with its needs. Even your kidneys play an important role by producing erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone that signals the bone marrow to increase red blood cell production when oxygen levels are low.
