Episode 14: Sunstroke
☀️🥵🌡️Sunstroke / Heatstroke is caused by your body overheating, usually as a result of prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in high temperatures (most common in the summer months.)

➡️ It is a life-threatening condition in which the body's heat-regulating system fails. The body fails to get rid itself of excess heat resulting in rise in body temperature upto 104 F (40 C) or higher.
High temperatures can cause the body’s major organs to fail.

➡️ To help prevent heat exhaustion or heatstroke:

✅ Drink plenty of water
3-4lit/day

✅ Take cool baths or shower

✅ Wear light-coloured, loose clothing

✅ Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm

✅ Avoid excess alcohol

✅ Avoid extreme exercise

➡️ Keep an eye on children, the elderly and people with long-term health conditions (like diabetes or heart problems), athletes, alcoholics because they're more at risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke

➡️ Hypertension is a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular and renal disease in India

➡️ Hypertension is a silent killer - High BP slowly damages the important blood vessels in our body without our knowledge.

➡️ If untreated, high blood pressure damages the blood vessels to different parts of the body
causing strokes(paralysis), heart attacks, kidney damage, damage to vision and other problems

➡️ Who should be screened for hypertension and how frequently?

✅ All those over 18 years should have the blood pressure checked every 2 years.

✅ If you are overweight, have diabetes, do little exercise(sedentary lifestyle), smoke, drink alcohol, or have familymembers with high blood pressure you should have it checked once a year.

➡️ How long should the BP medications be used?

✅ Blood pressure tablets donot cure the disease but control it only as long as you take them.

✅ Keep taking the tablets regularly and do not stop them without asking your doctor.

✅ BP tablet can be taken with or without food, but at same time for better control.

➡️ Will the tablets cause harm?

✅ Blood pressure tablets are usually very safe.

✅ If you do get side effects, there are many different medications to choose from and the doctorwill find one that suits you.

➡️ How often do I need to see the doctor?

✅ Till your blood pressure is controlled the doctor may see you once a month.

✅ Once the blood pressure is controlled you only need to see the doctor once in 6 months.

➡️ To reduce the risk of hypertension:

✅ Exercise regularly atleast 30 minutes a day and maintain a healthy weight

✅ Reduce salt intake

✅ Quit smoking and alcohol consumption

✅ Eat healthy, fresh and natural foods

✅ Gout is a common form of inflammatory arthritis that is very painful. There are times when symptoms get worse, known as flares. Repeated bouts of gout can lead to gouty arthritis, a worsening form of arthritis.

➡️ What causes Gout?
✅ Gout is caused by hyperuricemia, a condition where there is too much uric acid in the body. The body makes uric acid through break down of purines, which are found in your body and the foods you eat.
✅ Overproduction or underexcretion of uric acid through kidney results in hyperuricemia. As a result of too much uric acid in the body, uric acid crystals can build up in joints, fluids, and tissues within the body.

➡️ What are symptoms and signs of Gout?
✅ Gout usually occurs in only one joint at a time. It is often found in the big toe. Along with the big toe, joints that are commonly affected are the lesser toe joints, the ankle, and the knee.
✅ Painful(very severe) swelling of the joint is seen, associated with redness and local rise of temperature.

➡️ What are risk factors for Gout or Hyperuricemia?
✅ Overweight or Obese individuals. Common in Males.
✅ Having a diet high in purines. Purine-rich foods include red meat, shell fish, mince meat, meat extracts, organ meats and some seafood, such as anchovies, sardines, tuna and foods and drinks high in fructose/sugars.Yeast, whole pulses, peas, beans are moderately high in purines.
✅ Having certain health conditions like High blood pressure, Insulin resistance/Diabetes, Metabolic syndrome, Poor kidney function, Heart failure
✅ Using certain medications, such as diuretics
✅Drinking alcohol. The risk of gout is greater as alcohol intake goes up.

➡️ What are the complications of Hyperuricemia?
✅ Gouty arthritis/ Tophi (urate crystal deposition seens as hard bumps)
✅ Hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
✅ Kidney stones and Kidney damage.

➡️ How is Gout and Hyperuricemia treated?
✅ Treatment includes medication to reduce the inflammation, pain and swelling, uric acid lowering agents and medications to prevent gout flares
✅ Lifestyle changes which include weight reduction, alcohol abstinence, consumption of low purine foods.

Best fruits for diabetics include fiber-rich, low-glycemic index (GI) options like berries, apples, pears, citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruit), and kiwi, which help prevent blood sugar spikes. Guava is excellent for its very low GI (12-24).

Portion control and pairing fruit with protein or nuts is essential for managing blood glucose.
