Shadan Institute Of Medical Sciences concluded its three day program on Revised Basic Course Workshop on Medical Educational Technology which was held from October 21st to October 23rd 2021. It is an educational training program conducted by the Regional Centre for MET Gandhi Medical College under the aegis of National Medical Commission.

The Faculty from various departments of Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences participated in the program. The delegates were welcomed by the Dean Dr Sushil Pakyanadhan and Academic Director and Ex Dean Dr Dinesh Raj Mathur. The first day of the workshop marked the death anniversary of The Founder Father & Chairman Dr Vizarath Rasool Khan inspite of that the academic activities commenced as per Managing Director’s directives who said ‘ Had my father been alive , he would have never wanted the educational activities to stop at his college, the show must go on…’

The program had excellent talks on various topics in medical education by the pioneers in the field viz., Dr NVN Reddy who was also the observer appointed by the NMC. Dr PV Chalam ( Principal Bhaskar Medical College) graced the program with one of his talks on Attitude, Ethics and Communication on the last day of the program. Dr G Jyothi Lakshmi , Professor and HOD Microbiology, Osmania Medical college took lectures on various Teaching Learning Methods.

The Guest speakers were ably supported by the coordinator of MEU, SIMS Dr Pavan Kumar Reddy Professor of Psychiatry who started with the ice breaking and took lectures on Group Dynamics, CBME and Innovative teaching. Dr Simmi Soni, Professor of Anatomy , Dr Ibrahim Associate Professor Of Biochemistry, Dr P Shwetha Assistant of Psychiatry and Dr Hazari Assistant Professor of Pharmacology were among the few other speakers for the event.

Dr. Sarib Rasool Khan, Managing Director of Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences who has always been a front runner to conduct these educational programs congratulated the faculty members on the completion of their workshop as mandated by the NMC and thanked the Guest speakers for their valuable effort and time and also praised the Medical Education unit and the resource faculty for their outstanding work on conducting the workshop. Managing Director further spoke on as to how this workshop is an essential part of curriculum development for the teaching faculty and will help us realise our goal to achieve an ideal Indian Medical Graduate. He added that these programs are the need of the hour to improve the academic activities and bring the students at par with the latest developments in the field of medical education.

The program concluded with certificates being distributed to the participants by Dr NVN Reddy, NMC Observer who thanked and praised the participants for their interest and the enthusiasm they showed during the entire course of the workshop.

National Accreditation Board for Testing & Calibration Laboratories (NABL) provides accreditation to Conformity Assessment Bodies (Laboratories), NABL Schemes include Accreditation (Recognition) of Technical competence of testing & calibration as per international standards - a unique benefit of NABL accreditation is the recognition by various government bodies and regulators.

Shadan Group of Institutions decades ago spearheaded the revolution in the Medical & Health services thus creating a domain for itself, unarguably the numero-uno of the industry with an idea to bring about qualitative improvement in the standards of Medical & Health Education - their approach has been aggressive in timely upgradation of their infrastructure & services.

All the Laboratories have been upgraded as per the Biosafety level 2 which involves moderate health hazards so a proper training and information is very important for the concerned staff working in these facilities. A 4 days faculty training program was organised at Shadan institute of Medical Sciences under the supervision of Managing Director Dr Mohammed Sarib Rasool Khan for the staff deputed at the BSL-2 facilities.

International School of Quality Management ( ISQM ) trained the designated faculty. This course is intended to provide individuals with information necessary to comply with the requirements of the Biosafety in Medical and Biological Laboratory (BMBL) and Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules. It addresses work with moderate-risk biohazardous agents that are present in the community and associated with human disease of varying severity. Upgradation of these facilities will help in complying with the COVID-19 testing standards and contribute to the social cause.

Concluding day of the program saw the presence of Managing Director Dr Mohammed Sarib Rasool Khan in the auditorium to appraise the work done during the previous 4 days, he invited discussions and exchange of ideas from the trained faculty through the knowledge they gained during this period. He felicitated the visiting instructors & mentors and thanked them for their affability in conduct of the sessions and helping his staff upgrade themselves as per international standards.

The faculty training Program was attended by Director Academics - Dr Dinesh Raj Mathur, Deans of all the 3 Medical Colleges, Medical Superintendents, Nodal Officers, Lab Directors, Quality Managers, faculty of Pathology, faculty of Microbiology & faculty of Biochemistry and other authorised signatories.

Bio Safety Level - 2 ( BSL - 2 ) Laboratory.

Biological Safety Levels (BSL) are a series of protections relegated to autoclave-related activities that take place in particular biological laboratory. They are individual safeguards designed to protect laboratory personnel, as well as the surrounding environment and community.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) prescribes BSL-2 as a way of specific controls for the containment of microbes and biological agents.

These lab levels are determined by :-

* Risks related to containment
* Severity of infection
* Transmissibility
* Nature of the work conducted
* Origin of the microbe
* Agent in question
* Route of exposure

This biosafety level covers laboratories that work with agents associated with human diseases ( pathogenic or infectious organisms) that pose a health hazard.

Shadan Group of Institutions under the supervision of its Managing Director Dr Mohammed Sarib Rasool khan in a bid to enhance the already existing world class Laboratory facilities in all their Hospitals as per the standards of the BSL-2 have upgraded and installed the CDC prescribed equipments. The upgraded facilities support testing & research related activities related to the COVID-19 Pandemic, thus providing a convenience to the patient’s.

All the upgraded facilities were Inspected by DM&HO and was helped by the concerned staff to detail regarding the upgradation. Simultaneously a 4 day Faculty training program starting today was organised to train the faculty in Quality Management systems implementation as per NABL standards by International School of Quality Management.

The faculty training Program apart from the faculty of Pathology, Microbiology & Biochemistry was also attended by Director Academics - Dr Dinesh Raj Mathur, Deans of all the 3 Medical Colleges, Medical Superintendents, Nodal Officers, Lab Directors, Quality Managers & authorised signatories.

In a diversified approach towards an overall consolidation of the complete data of all institutions a centralised IT CELL is established with its satellite centers for ease and convenience of the Staff & Students. A personal one on one meeting was organised with the Managing Director to discuss and implement innovative ideas in regards to the set up and creation of centralised data. Creation of dedicated e-learning portals, Mobile Applications, personalised communication modes & various other aspects have been discussed and approved for implementation.

The Second Workshop of the Curriculum Implementation Support Programme (CISP - 2) for the Medical Council of India proposed curricular reforms in MBBS curriculum for Undergraduate Education was conducted by the Regional Center of the MCI, Gandhi Medical College, Secunderabad from 25th to 26th August 2020.

The faculty from all the three medical colleges, Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr. VRK Women's Medical College and Ayaan Institute of Medical Sciences participated in the programme at the institute whereas the faculty of all the other medical colleges attended online because of the restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

These reforms focus on enhancing integration, clinical competency, flexibility and improvement in quality of training. The Faculty Development Program to support curricular innovations has its focus on capacity development across the country and to develop guidelines and supportive documents for improving medical education. The purpose of the CISP-2 is to prepare and support faculty in Medical Colleges in planning, implementing and evaluating the new curriculum through a multi-tiered approach. The focus of the second year of the CISP will be on the identified curricular strategies being the early clinical exposure, integrated teaching and skills training.

Newer topics in CBME curriculum, such as Electives and Early clinical exposure were dealt with in details by the faculty and generated tremendous response from the participants regarding its planning and implementation.
Dr. N.V.N Reddy - Coordinator Regional Center of MCI, Gandhi Medical College inaugurated the session and presided over the introductions with ice breaking sessions. The concept of integration and alignment of the subjects along with designing the time-table was addressed by Dr.P.V.Chalam. Other speakers at the workshop were Dr. Jyoti Laxmi - Professor Microbiology, Gandhi Medical College and Dr. M. Anthony David Swaroop Kumar - Professor of Physiology, Gandhi Medical College. Concerns were also raised regarding the time frame for implementation, need for more faculty and need for support staff for effective implementations and documentation due to the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic.

Dr. Sarib Rasool Khan - Managing Director of Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr. VRK Women's Medical College, Nimra Institute of Medical Sciences and Ayaan Institute of Medical Sciences while speaking on the occasion said that the consolidation of objectives ensuring implementation of curriculum with appropriate teaching-learning strategies, tools, techniques and technology and commensurate mode of assessment are the parts of the core model for providing quality based undergraduate medical education. He also said that It gave him much confidence and satisfaction that the ‘competency based curriculum’ that has been proposed by the Medical Council of India would definitely serve a larger cause in the domain of quality medical education in his medical colleges.

Under the Deanship of Dr Prahlad (I/c Dean) and as per instructions of the Managing Director Sarib Rasool Khan, Shadan Institute Of Medical Sciences held a review meeting of the registrars and coordinators of the Pre , Para and Clinical departments.

The Meeting was presided over by Dr Prahlad I/c Dean ; The other dignitaries present were Dr Dinesh Raj Mathur Director Academics ; Dr Vasantha Prasad Medical Superintendent, Registrar Dr Swamy, Dr Pavan Kumar coördinator Centralised Medical Education unit and Dr Aasif Siddiqui Prof & HOD Biochemistry, Coordinator onlineExamnation UG/PG

The meeting was attended by all the appointed Registrars of the various departments and the academic Coordinators.

Dean I/c Dr Prahlad opened the meet and discussed the duties of the newly appointed registrars - updating the attendance of the undergraduate, post graduates and the teaching staff, organising and updating the teaching schedules for the undergraduates, post graduates and of the ongoing online medical education. More emphasis was given on the research aspect by the Dean and the registrars were asked to tune the postgraduates in having a sound knowledge of research work and publish articles in reputed journals, and also updated about the mandatory course on Revised Basic course workshops and workshop on research methodology. Registrars were also emphasised upon to look into the Thesis and maintenance of log books of the postgraduates . Coordinators attached with the Registrars were given the task of overseeing and guiding the Registrars and reporting directly to the Managing Director with the updates once every weak

Questions were taken from the Registrars about the difficulties faced by Dr Vasantha Prasad , Medical Superintendent and he assured all that their grievances and problem would be sorted out , if there were any .

The next topic of discussion was the ongoing online medical education of the undergraduates which was taken up by Dr Dinesh Raj Mathur , Director Academics . He congratulated all the coordinators of handling the online medical education process without any glitches and was full of praise for the recently concluded online assessment exam conducted for the MBBS First year students that went on very smoothly. He went on to add the various assessments to be conducted for the other professional years as well and discussed about coming up with a common assessment portion.

Dr Pavan Kumar , coördinator of medical education unit also gave his inputs and updated the dean about the future RBCW, AETCOM and CISP courses to be conducted for the faculty .

Dr Prahlad concluded the meeting thanking the Managing Director for his untiring efforts in providing quality medical education even during these testing times .

Management and I/C Dean Dr Prahlad Shadan Institute Of Medical Sciences organised an orientation programme for the newly joined Post graduate students.

Dr Pavan Kumar , Professor , Dept of Psychiatry welcomed the newly joined Post graduate students and introduced all the dignitaries on the Dias starting with Dr Prahlad I/C Dean of Shadan Institute Of Medical Sciences , Dr Vasantha Prasad Medical Superintendent and Former DME, Dr Dinesh Raj Mathur Director- Academics, Dr Madhusudhan Reddy Director - PG Studies, Dr Prithviraj Academic Advisor (AIMS),

The newly joined Post Graduate students seated following the Covid 19 protocol of social distancing where eager to listen in to the new rules being formulated keeping in mind the Covid 19 pandemic.

Dr Prahlad I/c Dean, welcomed the students and extended his good wishes to the students and asked to pursue their post graduation with zeal and enthusiasm and bring laurels to the institute. He added that the residents should take extra precautions while dealing with patients.

Dr Vasantha Prasad , congratulated the students of fulfilling their goal by getting into Post graduation . He asked the students to be sincere and dedicated during their three years of post graduation and devote themselves to the sincere service of the patients.

He further went on to add, about the current scenario the Health care workers are facing . He encouraged the post graduates to take on the current situation with precaution and come out strong .

Dr Prithviraj and Dr Madhusudhan welcomed the students, and highlighted the importance of maintaining decorum in front of the patients and their attendants. They went on to add about the importance of being regular and punctual for their duties.

Dr Dinesh Raj Mathur , spoke earnestly and made a special mention of Founder Father Dr Vizarath Rasool Khan whose patience, dedication and zeal had brought the Institute to a place where it stands now. He thanked Madam Secretary Ms Shadan Tehniyath, who has been a pillar of strength for the Shadan family and Thanked from the bottom of his heart Managing Director Sarib Rasool Khan who has taken the legacy forward of his father with honest work and dedication.

Dr Pavan concluded the meet with a vote of Thanks and asked the post graduates to proceed to their respective Departments.

The Orientation Programme for the new batch of Post Graduate students of 2020 batch in Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences, Teaching Hospital and Research Center was conducted under the aegis of Dr. B. Prahlad - incharge Dean of SIMS in the presence of Academic Committee members of the Institute.

They were initiated with a warm welcome by the Dean and given a brief introduction of the rules and regulations governing their specialisation training in the Hospital. All the protocols of the hospital and their duties for their respective departments were explained to them in good detail. He also asked the PGs to apprise themselves of all the online academic activities initiated by the management in the college due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to participate in them regularly. The doctors looked very excited and jubilant to begin the next phase of their academics in such an esteemed institution.

Dr. Sarib Rasool Khan - Managing Director of the Institute, congratulated the students for achieving yet another milestone in their quest to build a successful career in the medical fraternity as clinicians, surgeons and researchers. He outlined the innovative pedagogical methods employed by his institutes to keep the students engrossed in academic as well as clinical course work. He welcomed the doctors and wished them the best of luck for training in their respective specialisations and encouraged them to work hard and live up to the principles of the Hippocratic Oath. He also reiterated the implementation of clinical guidelines and protocols for COVID-19 in the hospital at all times and emphasised the importance of social distancing in other areas of the campus.

A meeting comprising of all the members of the Academic Committee, the teaching and clinical faculty, medical Coordinators and staff , Health care workers, Technical staff, Paramedical, & OSD ,Registrar of Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences, Teaching Hospital and Research Center was conducted by the Managing Director - to discuss about the online teaching programmes being held at the institute during the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. The staff was asked to give their valuable feedback regarding the innovative techniques being implemented for the academic curriculum. The results of the recently held successful online mock tests for the students were also discussed elaborately.

Dr. Sarib Rasool Khan also expressed his grave concern about the prevailing pandemic situation in the city. He inquired about the preparedness of the hospital along with RMO,Medical Suptd, Nodal officers , Cordinaters, which has been a government designated COVID-19 center and has been waiting for instructions from the government to start operations. He hoped that all the residents stay safe and practice social distancing. He also wished a speedy recovery to all those who are suffering from the infection.
