COMING TOGETHER WITHOUT SILOS

Not every meaningful conversation makes headlines. Some of the most important ones happen quietly, in a room where 30 organisations come together, speak honestly, and simply listen and learn from each other.

Thatโ€™s what happened in Chennai.
The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities(DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, GOI, in collaboration with Youth4Jobs Foundation, convened a Stakeholder Consultation on strengthening skilling, livelihoods, and employment for persons with disabilities.

Chaired by .Vidyavathi Vaidyanathan, IAS, Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD)

- Ms. Manmeet Nanda, IAS, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment Govt. of India
- Ms. Richa Shankar, Deputy Director General, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD)
- Ms. Meera Shenoy, Founder, Youth4Jobs Foundation

Later joined by Mr. Venkatesan Dhattareyan, Regional Director, South, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India

It was the first time a Secretary from Delhi had led these direct consultations to understand:

- Where each organisation is in its skilling journey for persons with disabilities.
- What needs to be done by companies or training organisations to step up their inclusion efforts.
- How the government can provide sensitive support.

17 NGOs. 13 employer partners. One shared purpose.

The discussion was open, grounded, highly interactive, productive, and full of the kind of honesty that only comes when people are given the space to speak. NGOs wanted to visit companies to see best practices, and vice versa. The inputs from these conversations will be fed into the Divyangjan Kaushal Yojana. This feeling of being on the same journey, without silos, is what made the Chennai meet an auspicious beginning.
