Dr. Ramya Explains Sjögren’s Disease
Sjögren’s disease is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks moisture-producing glands, especially the tear and salivary glands. This commonly causes persistent dry eyes and dry mouth.
Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore
Watch for:
- Burning, gritty, or irritated eyes.
- Dry mouth, difficulty swallowing dry foods, or frequent thirst.
- Tooth decay or repeated oral infections.
- Severe fatigue, joint pain, muscle pain, or skin dryness.
- Dry throat, persistent cough, vaginal dryness, or recurrent swelling near the salivary glands.
Sjögren’s disease can sometimes affect organs such as the lungs, kidneys, nerves, or digestive system, so ongoing symptoms deserve medical evaluation. Diagnosis may involve a rheumatology examination, blood tests, eye tests, and salivary-gland assessment.
