The dream of a malaria-free world may be reality in our lifetime. Science is providing newer, better tools with which malaria can be eradicated and it is up to us, individually and as nations, to wield them successfully.
National policies show a reduction in the incidence of malaria, with 47 countries certified malaria-free [1]. India’s achievement in her fight against malaria is exemplified by her removal from the WHO’s high burden to high impact (HBHI) group in 2024 [2]. India’s goal is to eradicate malaria by 2030. To achieve this, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in partnership with the National Institute of Immunology is developing a vaccine [3].
Individually, we can contribute to this goal by completing the course of anti-malaria drugs when prescribed and vaccinating our children against malaria when the vaccine becomes available and is recommended. Together, let us eradicate malaria.
