Our institute has signed an MoU with a Start-up FermiAyur for mentoring and handloding for the production and functional evaluation of Fermented wheat bran polysaccharide (FWBP) as multifunctional prebiotic and bioactive delivery system for nutrients and functional food bioactives with improved bioavailability. This was awarded as the most promising innovation during INFUSE 2025 summit.

FWBP is a single ingredient with multiple functional roles that traditionally require separate components- prebiotic potential, gut health, immune modulation, active delivery matrix due to emulsification and encapsulation potential. FermiAyur is respresented by Dr Digambar Kavitake and Dr HS Shetty. FWBP is an off-shoot of the postdoctoral research of Dr Digambar that he carried out at ICMR-NIN under the mentorship of Dr G Bhanuprakash Reddy, Scientist G.

A new perspective on regulating unhealthy foods in India
A commentary published in Lancet Regional Health – Southeast Asia by our researchers proposes a dual-axis framework that integrates:
✔️ Degree of food processing (UPFs)
✔️ High Fat, Sugar and Salt (HFSS) nutrient thresholds
✔️ India’s unique food systems and culinary diversity
The paper argues that focusing on only nutrients or only processing may not adequately capture the complexity of Indian foods.
The proposed approach builds on the Dietary Guidelines for Indians (2024)

✔️ Fiscal and policy measures to promote healthier diets
✔️ Youth engagement and behaviour change communication

The workshop also featured the launch of several knowledge resources, including the Nutrition Environment Assessment Toolkit for Schools (NEAT-S), an e-learning module on food labels, and educational resources on fats, sugars and salt.

Can a simple tool help identify hidden hunger in children?
A recent publication in European Journal of Clinical Nutrition by a team led by SubbaRao M Gavaravarapu , Scientist G describes development of a Diet Diversity Score (DDS) to assess micronutrient adequacy in children aged 6–10 years.

Based on 13 food groups, the DDS showed that children consuming at least 5 g each of 10 or more food groups were more likely to meet adequate micronutrient intakes
