Extreme summer heat can affect not only physical health but also mental well-being. According to the World Health Organization, high temperatures can worsen symptoms in individuals with mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety.
Heat can contribute to irritability, agitation, poor sleep, fatigue, emotional distress, and difficulty concentrating. Individuals taking psychiatric medications may be at greater risk, as some medications can affect the body's ability to regulate temperature.

IMPORTANT FACTS

🔹 Studies have found that psychiatric emergency visits tend to increase during periods of extreme heat.
🔹 Sleep disturbances caused by hot weather can worsen mood, anxiety, and psychotic symptoms.
🔹 People living with severe mental illnesses are more vulnerable to heat-related health complications.
🔹 Some psychiatric medications may reduce sweating, increase dehydration risk, or impair temperature regulation.
🔹 Staying hydrated and maintaining a cool environment can help reduce heat-related stress on both the mind and body.
🔹 Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of heatwaves, making heat-related mental health awareness increasingly important.

HOW TO COPE SUMMER HEAT

✔ Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
✔ Stay in cool, shaded, or well-ventilated areas whenever possible.
✔ Avoid direct sun exposure during peak heat hours (11 AM–4 PM).
✔ Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
✔ Maintain a regular sleep schedule.
✔ Eat light, nutritious meals and include fruits with high water content.
✔ Take prescribed medications as directed and consult your healthcare provider if you experience excessive dizziness, dehydration, or heat intolerance.
✔ Seek support if you notice increased stress, irritability, low mood, or worsening mental health symptoms.

The mother was admitted as a known case of schizophrenia. As reported, both mother and daughter had been living in very difficult conditions and were struggling with both mental illness and the hardships of daily life. Even during the admission process, they could hardly stay apart from each other. Still, their love and bond remained clearly visible — especially in the simple moment of the daughter gently combing her mother’s hair, a moment of care and love that even mental illness could not take away. ❤️

Mental illness can affect a person’s thoughts, emotions, behaviour, self-care, and relationships. Without proper treatment and support, it can become very difficult for both the patient and the family. But with timely psychiatric care, medications, therapy, rehabilitation, and family support, improvement and recovery are possible.

Today, on Mother’s Day, this moment reminds us that behind every illness is a human story filled with love, pain, strength, and hope. Let us also remember the importance of compassion, mental health awareness, and seeking help without shame.

The patient was later discharged with improvement in overall functioning and was regularly following the prescribed treatment and rehabilitation plan.

NB: This footage is from the actual moment, however, visual effects have been added to protect the privacy and dignity of the patient and family. Consent for sharing the content has already been obtained.

Surrounded by our lush green campus, our staff on duty with inmates came together to harvest fresh ingredients straight from nature.

We collected Heibi-Mana, Kobi, Umorok, and other local herbs, and prepared Singju together 🥗

Singju is often a favourite among women in Manipur (though not formally researched), and making it in such a calm, green setting with the rainy season approaching brings back many old memories.

Moments like this allow us to reconnect with familiar experiences, relive simple joys, and bring those memories back into awareness, often enhancing motivation in a natural way.

Ps.: All the herbs are planted and looked after by our inmates themselves, making the experience even more meaningful.

Today, a structured group activity was conducted with the inpatients to promote teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. Participants were divided into four teams, and each team was provided with 10 used A4-size papers.

The task involved collaboratively constructing the tallest and most stable tower within a time limit of 10 minutes. Emphasis was placed on cooperation, shared decision-making, and mutual support during the activity.

All participants were encouraged to actively engage, and efforts were acknowledged across all teams to ensure an inclusive and supportive environment. In addition to identifying the team with the tallest and most stable structure, appreciation was also given for qualities such as effective teamwork, creativity, and participation, to minimize unhealthy competition and support positive group dynamics.

Reinforcements were provided in a sensitive and equitable manner. While the winning team was offered a meaningful incentive such as facilitated communication with loved ones (where appropriate and feasible), alternative rewards (e.g., recreational privileges, choice of activity, or group recognition) were ensured for all participants, considering individual circumstances and emotional needs.

A brief reflective discussion was conducted post-activity, allowing participants to share their experiences, challenges, and feelings during the task. This facilitated insight into teamwork, emotional responses, and coping strategies.

World Earth Day at Flamingo Mental Health Care for Women

World Earth Day reminds us that a healthy planet and a healthy mind are deeply connected. Spending time in nature can reduce stress, improve mood, and create a sense of calm and grounding. At Flamingo, our inpatients and clients celebrated this day by expressing their connection with the Earth through small artwork slogans, actively participating in cleaning and grooming our garden and surroundings, and coming together for a group photograph to capture the spirit of unity. The celebration concluded with an “In Touch with Earth” mindful meditation, helping everyone reconnect with nature and themselves. Because nurturing the environment is also a meaningful step towards nurturing mental well-being 💚🌿
