Therapist disclosure is often approached as a question of technique: what should be disclosed, when, and under what circumstances. Yet disclosure is better understood as a relational intervention. Whether through words, actions, omissions, or presence itself, therapists inevitably communicate aspects of themselves. The clinical task is not to eliminate disclosure, but to understand how it functions within the therapeutic relationship.
Disclosure is more than just the sharing of information. It can provide context, reveal process, support regulation, deepen engagement, and shape the meanings that emerge between therapist and client. Every disclosure has the potential to influence trust, intimacy, authority, and the direction of the work. Equally important is what remains undisclosed, and the ways in which restraint, ambiguity, or silence may also communicate meaning.
Clinical discernment therefore requires more than adherence to fixed rules. It calls for ongoing attention to intention, timing, therapeutic purpose, and the evolving relational context. The question is not simply whether to disclose, but what function a disclosure may serve, what it communicates, and what possibilities it opens or forecloses within the therapeutic process.
The Edge Advanced Course explores disclosure as a dynamic clinical process, inviting practitioners to move beyond questions of appropriateness toward a deeper understanding of how disclosure shapes therapeutic action, influences the relationship, and creates conditions for meaningful change.

There are people who will tell you that delight is frivolous. That serious people concern themselves with serious things. Do not listen to these people.

We often imagine transformation as a process of uncovering truth, as though the right explanation might finally set us free. Beneath much of modern psychology lies the promise that if we can understand ourselves clearly enough, we will eventually transcend our suffering. Yet the possibility remains that some wounds are not seeking answers but companionship.

This piece explores why insight, for all its value, is often insufficient on its own, and why certain parts of us seem to change only when they are encountered, recognised, and carried within a relationship. There are burdens that understanding can name, but only connection can lighten.

A psychology degree comes with many unexpected skills. Chief among them: the ability to accidentally psychoanalyse an entire family before dessert.

For students caught between understanding people and understanding themselves, between learning psychology and becoming a therapist, this piece may feel uncomfortably familiar. The Edge Undergraduate Fellowship Programme was built for this strange and important in-between.

Therapy is often imagined as a process of finding answers. Yet some of its most transformative moments have very little to do with answers at all. They happen when a person brings forward a grief they've never spoken aloud, an anger they fear will drive people away, or a shame they have spent years hiding. Beneath the words is often an unspoken question: "Will you still be here once you know this about me?"

The therapist's response isn't always verbal. Sometimes it is conveyed through presence itself, through staying engaged and through demonstrating, moment by moment, that intimacy does not have to collapse under the weight of truth. For many of us, this experience isn't just comforting, it's also corrective.

The Body Keeps the Score is one of the most influential books ever written about trauma. It has shaped how many people understand their own experiences and influenced conversations far beyond therapy rooms.

But influence is not the same thing as evidence. This piece looks at where the book came from, what it claims, what current research supports, and where important questions remain unanswered.
