Restless leg syndrome causes & management
🟣 What is restless leg syndrome?
➟ Restless leg syndrome, or RLS, is a nervous system condition that causes an uncomfortable urge to move the legs.
➟ It usually becomes worse during rest, especially in the evening or at night, and can disturb sleep.
🟣 Common signs
➟ Strong urge to move the legs, especially while lying down or sitting.
➟ Crawling, pulling, tingling, aching, or uncomfortable sensations in the legs.
➟ Symptoms often improve temporarily with walking, stretching, or movement.
➟ Symptoms are usually worse at night.
➟ Poor sleep, daytime tiredness, irritability, or poor concentration may occur.
🟣 Common causes and triggers
➟ Many cases have no single clear cause.
➟ Low iron stores can trigger or worsen RLS, even without severe anemia.
➟ Pregnancy can cause temporary RLS in some women.
➟ Kidney disease, diabetes, nerve problems, and some medicines may contribute.
➟ Caffeine, alcohol, ni****ne, poor sleep, and long sitting may worsen symptoms.
🟣 Management
➟ See a doctor if symptoms are frequent, disturbing sleep, or affecting daily life.
➟ Blood tests may be advised, especially iron/ferritin level, CBC, kidney function, blood sugar, and vitamin levels if needed.
➟ Treat underlying causes such as iron deficiency, kidney disease, diabetes, or medicine-related triggers.
➟ Do not take iron supplements blindly; excess iron can be harmful.
🟣 Lifestyle tips
➟ Keep a regular sleep schedule.
➟ Reduce caffeine, alcohol, and smoking, especially in the evening.
➟ Gentle stretching, walking, leg massage, warm bath, or heat/cold packs may help some people.
➟ Avoid long periods of sitting; move and stretch during travel or desk work.
🟣 Medicines
➟ If symptoms are severe, doctors may prescribe medicines that calm nerve signals or improve sleep.
➟ Some medicines can worsen RLS, so a doctor may review antidepressants, allergy medicines, nausea medicines, or other regular drugs.
➟ Long-term treatment should be monitored because some medicines can make symptoms worse over time.
🟣 Seek medical care early if
➟ Symptoms are severe, one-sided, painful, associated with leg swelling, numbness, weakness, or difficulty walking.
➟ There is poor sleep, daytime sleepiness, pregnancy, kidney disease, diabetes, or suspected iron deficiency.
