# # What is Metabolic Psychiatry?

Metabolic Psychiatry is an approach to mental health that looks at how the body’s metabolism affects the brain.

It focuses on the connection between mental health and factors like:

- Blood sugar balance
- Insulin resistance
- Inflammation
- Mitochondrial function
- Nutrition
- Gut health
- Sleep
- Hormones
- Weight and metabolic health

The idea is that the brain needs steady energy and healthy body systems to function well.

# # Why is Metabolic Psychiatry important?

Mental health symptoms are not always only caused by “chemical imbalance.” In many people, mood, anxiety, focus, and energy can be affected by metabolic problems.

For example:

- Blood sugar crashes can cause irritability, anxiety, fatigue, and cravings
- Insulin resistance may be linked with depression, brain fog, and low energy
- Poor sleep can worsen mood and stress hormones
- Inflammation can affect brain function and emotional regulation
- Nutrient deficiencies can affect neurotransmitters and energy production

Metabolic psychiatry is important because it helps identify and treat these deeper biological contributors.

# # How does Metabolic Psychiatry work?

# # # 1. Detailed assessment
The doctor looks at mental health symptoms along with physical health, lifestyle, diet, sleep, stress, medical history, and family history.

# # # 2. Metabolic evaluation
It may involve checking markers such as:

- Blood sugar and insulin
- HbA1c
- Lipid profile
- Thyroid function
- Vitamin D, B12, iron
- Inflammation markers
- Weight, waist circumference, blood pressure

# # # 3. Personalized treatment plan
Treatment may include:

- Nutrition changes
- Exercise and strength training
- Sleep improvement
- Stress management
- Weight and insulin resistance management
- Supplements if needed
- Medication when required
- Psychotherapy or counselling

# # # 4. Regular follow-up
Progress is monitored through symptoms, energy, sleep, mood, focus, and metabolic markers.

---

# # # Simple explanation:

Traditional psychiatry often focuses on symptoms and diagnosis.
Metabolic psychiatry looks at how metabolism, inflammation, blood sugar, and lifestyle may be affecting the brain.
It is not against medication. It combines psychiatric care with metabolic and lifestyle-based treatment to support long-term mental wellbeing.

Metabolic Health and Mental Health: Why Your Blood Tests Matter?

16/05/2026

Metabolic Health and Mental Health: Why Your Blood Tests Matter- We discuss the important connection between metabolic health and mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. If you’re between 25-40 years old and medications aren’t helping, we recommend getting three key tests: fasting insulin, HbA1c, and fasting blood sugar. These metabolic markers can significantly impact your cognitive and emotional well-being.

# # What is Functional Psychiatry?

**Functional Psychiatry** is a whole-person approach to mental health. It does not only ask, “What is the diagnosis?” It also asks, **“What is driving these symptoms?”**

It examines the connections among the **brain, body, lifestyle, nutrition, sleep, stress, hormones, gut health, Inflammation, and metabolism**.

Functional psychiatry can support people with concerns like anxiety, depression, brain fog, sleep issues, mood swings, fatigue, ADHD symptoms, and stress-related conditions.

---

# # Why is Functional Psychiatry important?

Because mental health is not only about the brain. Many body systems can affect mood, focus, sleep, and emotional balance.

For example:

- Poor sleep can worsen anxiety and depression
- Nutrient deficiencies like vitamin D, B12, iron, or omega-3 can affect mood and energy
- Gut health can influence inflammation and the gut-brain axis
- Thyroid and hormonal imbalances can mimic or worsen mental health symptoms
- Blood sugar imbalance can cause irritability, fatigue, cravings, and mood swings
- Chronic stress can affect cortisol, digestion, immunity, and sleep

Functional psychiatry is important because it helps identify and address the root causes rather than merely suppressing symptoms.

# # How does Functional Psychiatry work?

# # # 1. Detailed history
The doctor explores your symptoms, lifestyle, medical history, family history, sleep, diet, stress, trauma, gut health, hormones, and daily habits.

# # # 2. Root-cause evaluation
It may include checking for possible contributors such as:

- Nutrient deficiencies
- Thyroid imbalance
- Hormonal issues
- Gut health problems
- Inflammation
- Insulin resistance or blood sugar imbalance
- Sleep disruption
- Chronic stress
- Medication or substance effects

# # # 3. Personalised treatment plan
Treatment is customised for each person. It may include:

- Psychotherapy or counselling
- Medication when needed
- Nutrition changes
- Sleep correction
- Stress-management practices
- Exercise and movement
- Gut health support
- Supplements if clinically appropriate
- Metabolic and hormonal support

# # # 4. Regular monitoring
Progress is tracked, and the plan is adjusted based on response, symptoms, lab markers, if needed, and overall wellbeing.

Sometimes the answers we need aren't in the textbooks we studied.

Until 2017, I was a traditional psychiatrist. I followed protocols. I trusted medications. I believed I understood mental health.

Then I met a child who changed everything. 💙

He wasn't responding to any standard treatment. I was stuck—and honestly, heartbroken.

That's when I discovered that his gut microbiome was affecting his brain by influencing inflammation and neurotransmitter production. He improved with antibiotics, not psychiatric medications.

That moment—one child, one discovery—completely shifted how I practice medicine.

With invaluable guidance from Dr Nancy at the PANDAS International Physician Network, I started to make sense of what I was witnessing. That was the start of 8 years focused on learning:

Through this journey, one truth became clear:

Your gut produces neurotransmitters that impact brain signalling. Your hormones affect how you feel. Your nutrition feeds your brain. Your cells power your thoughts.

---

If you're struggling and nothing seems to work—please read this:

You're not broken. ❤️ You're not "too far gone." You may just need someone to look at your WHOLE body.

I've watched patients labelled "treatment-resistant" transform once we addressed gut health, hormones, and nutrition alongside traditional care.

Recovery IS possible. Quality of life CAN improve. Hope IS real.

It's a journey. It takes patience. It takes commitment.

But I've seen it happen again and again.

---

Let's break the stigma together.

Mental health is not just a matter of thoughts—it's deeply connected to your entire body.

And when we treat it that way, healing becomes possible. 🌱
