🚨 Bile Leak or Jaundice After Cholecystectomy? Early Endoscopy Can Save Your Bile Duct & Prevent Major Surgery.
Bile duct injury (BDI) is a rare but serious complication after laparoscopic/open gallbladder (cholecystectomy) surgery. Early diagnosis and timely ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) can effectively treat many bile leaks and selected bile duct injuries, reducing complications and helping many patients avoid major reconstructive surgery.
Common warning signs after gallbladder surgery include: ✅ Persistent abdominal pain
✅ Fever or chills
✅ Jaundice (yellow eyes/skin)
✅ Bile leak from drain or wound
✅ Persistent vomiting or abdominal swelling
Early referral to an experienced gastroenterologist and therapeutic endoscopist is crucial. Timely endoscopic intervention with ERCP, biliary stenting, sphincterotomy, and stricture management can significantly improve outcomes in appropriate patients.
