A Story of Courage, Critical Care, and Hope: Paediatric Team Saves a Critically Ill Infant.

The Department of Paediatrics, Shree Krishna Hospital, Bhaikaka University, Karamsad, successfully treated a 4-month-old infant who was admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in an extremely critical condition with multiple life-threatening complications.

The baby was diagnosed with Community-Acquired pneumonia, Septic Shock, Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), and a Massive Intracranial Hemorrhage with a 10 mm mid-line shift. During the course of treatment, the child also developed Pseudomonas Sepsis and gangrene of the right hand, making the clinical course exceptionally challenging.

The infant required 11 days of mechanical ventilation, intensive PICU care, Inotropic support, blood and plasma transfusions, prolonged intravenous antibiotics, correction of Metabolic Abnormalities, and Peritoneal Dialysis for Acute Kidney Injury. Brain imaging confirmed a large Intracerebral Haemorrhage, and after detailed discussion with the family and consultation with Neurosurgery, the child was managed conservatively with meticulous monitoring.

As treatment progressed, persistent infection and vascular complications were successfully managed through coordinated care involving Paediatrics, Paediatric Intensive Care, Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Vascular Surgery, Physiotherapy, and Nutrition services.

After nearly two months of intensive multidisciplinary care, the infant recovered remarkably, was successfully weaned off the ventilator, resumed feeding, showed neurological improvement, and was discharged in a clinically stable condition on room air with appropriate follow-up.

This remarkable recovery reflects the expertise, dedication, and seamless teamwork of our multidisciplinary paediatric team, demonstrating that even the most critically ill children can overcome extraordinary challenges with timely, evidence-based, and compassionate care.

Shree Krishna Hospital, Bhaikaka University, Karamsad, has been conferred the “First Achiever – Best Hospital in Nursing Excellence (Western India)” award at the 4th ICC National Nursing Excellence Awards 2026, held at The Park Hotel, Hyderabad, on July 11,2026

The award was presented during the 4th ICC National Nursing Summit & Excellence Awards, organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in association with the Indian Nursing Council (INC) and the Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organizations (CAHO). The summit brought together healthcare leaders and nursing professionals from across the country to recognise excellence and innovation in nursing practice.

The award recognises Shree Krishna Hospital's commitment to nursing excellence, patient-centred care, quality improvement, and innovation in healthcare delivery. It also acknowledges the dedication and professionalism of the hospital's nursing workforce in providing safe, compassionate, and high-quality patient care.

The award was presented by Dr. T. Dileep Kumar, President of the Indian Nursing Council (INC). Mr. Sunil Joshi, Chief Nursing Officer, Shree Krishna Hospital, received the award on behalf of the institution.
