Pemphigus Foliaceus in Cat

Kannan, Persian, Male Cat and his parent Kiran were equally worried when they came to us. Kannan was hairless with crusts, and pustules all over his body. Pemphigus Foliaceus is the most common autoimmune skin disease in cats.

Dx / Diagnosis : Punch biopsy of skin using punch biopsy needle. Confirmation by presense superficial acantholysis, and excluding relevant differential diagnosis.

Rx / Treatment : Immunosuppression, and symptamatic treatment to concurrent coditions are the key elements. Steroids and other novel adjuant therapies are beneficial. Kannan was successfully managed on prednisolone and abx

Outcome / Prognosis : Good in cats depending up on comorbidities and response to treatment. Remission in 4-8 weeks. However, relapses may occur in 60 -70 % of the cases.
