Walking through waterlogged streets during the monsoon may seem unavoidable, but it can expose you to leptospirosis, a bacterial infection spread through water contaminated with the urine of infected animals, especially rats.
The bacteria can enter the body through small cuts on the skin or through the eyes, nose, or mouth. Early symptoms often include fever, headache, muscle pain, chills, and vomiting. If left untreated, the infection can become serious and affect the kidneys, liver, or lungs.
If you have been exposed to floodwater and develop a fever or flu like symptoms within a few days, do not ignore them. Early diagnosis and timely treatment can help prevent complications.
Stay safe this monsoon by avoiding unnecessary contact with stagnant water, wearing protective footwear, and washing thoroughly after exposure.
