Proud Moment for KPC Medical College & Hospital
We are thrilled to announce that our dedicated team at KPC Medical College & Hospital has made a significant contribution to medical literature with the publication of a rare case report in the prestigious Annals of Internal Medicine: Clinical Cases (American College of Physicians). This groundbreaking work highlights a unique case of muscle tear leading to diabetic muscle infarction in a patient with uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus – an extremely rare occurrence in the upper limb.
Led by our esteemed Prof (Dr.) Nirmalya Roy, MBBS, MD (General Medicine), along with co-authors Dr. Dipra Dattasarma, Dr. Mainak Mandal, Dr. Sayantani Ghosh, Dr. Akriti Singh, Dr. Abhishek Praharaj, Dr. Soumyadeep Maity and Dr. Abhishek Chanda, this case report details the journey of a 65-year-old woman who presented with severe shoulder pain after a simple massage. What started as a supraspinatus tendon tear evolved into diabetic muscle infarction, complicated by myositis, hematoma, and secondary infection. Through timely diagnosis using MRI, optimized glycemic control, targeted antibiotics, and multidisciplinary care involving General Medicine, Radiology and Orthopedics, the patient made a full recovery and was discharged after 21 days, with plans for elective shoulder surgery.
Prof (Dr.) Nirmalya Roy's expertise in managing complex diabetic complications played a pivotal role in this successful outcome, underscoring the importance of early intervention and awareness in poorly controlled diabetes. This case is a reminder that diabetes can lead to under-reported musculoskeletal issues, and patients should avoid strenuous activities while maintaining strict blood sugar control.
Congratulations to the entire team for this achievement! At KPC, we continue to push boundaries in patient care and research. Stay tuned for more updates, and remember: Control your diabetes to protect your health!

We are thrilled to announce that our esteemed faculty member, Prof (Dr.) Nirmalya Roy, MBBS, MD, along with Dr. Mainak Mandal, MBBS, has made a significant contribution to global medical literature. Their case report on "Insulin-Induced Lipohypertrophy" has been published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) – one of the world's leading medical journals!
In this insightful Images in Clinical Medicine feature (DOI: 10.1056/NEJMicm2314962, June 20, 2024), they describe the case of a 65-year-old man with type 2 diabetes who developed rubbery subcutaneous masses from repeated insulin injections at the same sites. This condition, known as insulin-induced lipohypertrophy, can lead to poor glycemic control and is often overlooked. 17/09/2025

Today, on World Patient Safety Day, 17th September 2025 we at KPC Medical College & Hospital, Jadavpur recommit ourselves to the fundamental promise of medicine: to care, to heal, to protect. This year’s WHO theme reminds us that safe care must begin from the very first breaths — for every newborn, and for every child. Because in their vulnerability lies our greatest responsibility.

What we at KPC Medical College & Hospital pledge to do

1. Ensure safe, evidence-based protocols in our neonatal and paediatric units — from correct dosing to infection control; from monitoring to follow-ups.
2. Strengthen staff training — doctors, nurses, support staff — on child-specific safety issues: recognizing early warning signs, effective communication with parents, safe use of equipment.
3. Engage parents and caregivers as partners: encouraging them to ask questions, be part of decision-making, and observe care; their role is vital.
4. Promote a culture of safety: where mistakes can be reported and discussed without blame, where continuous improvement is embedded.
5. Use data and feedback: track adverse events in newborn/child care, analyse root causes, implement corrective measures, and share lessons learned.

A call to everyone: Together, we can do better

To our students, our medical and nursing staff, our support team, our patients and families, and our community:

- Speak up when something doesn’t feel right.
- Listen to the whispers of discomfort — in a child who can’t say much, in a parent who fears their child is not being heard.
- Support safety standards — wash hands, use checklists, double-wire critical doses, ensure cleanliness, and care.
- Recognize that safety is not optional. It is part of caring. It must start "from the start".

Let us remember: beautiful tomorrows for our patients begin with safe care today.

🌟 Join us in lighting up hope on this World Patient Safety Day — in our wards, in our hearts, in our practices.
💬 Share this message. Let’s spread awareness. Let’s build safety, from the very beginning.
