International Youth Day: Beyond Teenage Angst
Every August 12th, the world celebrates International Youth Day. We call young people our future, praise their potential, and look forward to what they will build.
But praising tomorrow does nothing to ease the weight of today.
Too often, we dismiss emotional shifts in young people as "just a phase" or typical teenage drama. But when does expected emotional development cross the line into clinical depression?
Understanding the Difference:
Normal Mood Swings: Fluctuate with situations, pass with time, and rarely paralyze a young person’s daily life.
Red Flags for Depression: Sadness or irritability that persists across weeks, sudden drops in academic or daily functioning, deep social withdrawal, and anhedonia (losing interest in everything they once loved).
Recognizing these warning signs isn't about placing labels—it’s about offering timely, life-saving support. Young people aren't just promises of what is to come; they are navigating real, heavy burdens right now.
Let's move beyond empty praise. See the signs, value their present, and stand with them today.
