Rumi said, "If everything around seems dark, look again; you may be the light."
This is an extremely profound statement that has been realized by so many scientists, poets, authors and philosophers throughout the world.

Harry Potter found the philosopher's stone right there in his pocket; Kung Fu Panda, the animated movie, taught us - "the secret ingredient is nothing but YOU"

We look for answers elsewhere, yet it may be right there close to you or within you.

1. Quiet the noise

I had the privilege of learning mindfulness meditation from Sarana Institute, inspired by Dr. Agnes Wong, MD, PhD, FRCSC. We learned that our minds are like the waves of the ocean; our worries and fleeting thoughts are like the turbulent waves on the outside; however, when we dive deeper, we find calmness and the solutions to every problem lie there. Just look for it and you will find the answer!

2. Cultivate Self Awareness

Training in behavioural neurology not only helped me analyze disease states and neurodegenerative conditions, but also helped me decode the complexities of human behaviour to some extent. Remember, it always starts with you. Healing ourselves makes us better healers.

3. Connect with your values

We should have a strong understanding of what (not the matter, but the mind) we are made of. Who we truly are? Our characters are forged in the mould of our daily habits and actions. Integrity is quietly engraved when nobody is watching you. You are your best critic.

4. Tune into intuition

The metaphorical heart whispers and shows you signs. It has the map that traces your journey. Sometimes you need to quieten down your logical and analytical mind to listen to the whispers that talk about limitless possibilities, breaking free of societal and generational limiting beliefs.

5. Examine core beliefs

Your brain is an enigma. It is equipped with 'Metacognition' that observes you, corrects you, helps you understand your strengths and limitations. Hone your skillset and work on your limitations, provided it helps you fulfil your dreams.

6. Find inner peace

The key features of life are -
- Impermanence
- Uncertainty and
- "This too shall pass"

Our overstimulated brains are victims of "hedonic adaptation". We start normalizing achievements, forget to celebrate small victories and start running after the next award or accolade. Nothing makes us happy anymore. On the opposite spectrum, we tend to become emotionally numb to our losses and sorrows. It is important to pat yourself on accomplishing something that makes you happy. It is equally important to cry...to feel the pain of loss and failure. Feeling every emotion is what makes us human, what makes us resilient yet vulnerable beings.

As medical students, we were introduced to Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, a Swiss-American Psychiatrist, through her proposed "five stages" model of grief, as a pattern of adjustment: denial – anger – bargaining - depression – acceptance. It was a part of her book named “ On Death and Dying”, published in 1969.

I always admired the way she interpreted the concept of death, loss and grief. When going through her biography, I came across the following quote:

“It's only when we truly know and understand that we have a limited time on earth — and that we have no way of knowing when our time is up — that we will begin to live each day to the fullest, as if it was the only one we had.”
― Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

I love reading quotes, not just because they sound nice, but because they capture the essence of a life lesson imbibed by a person over the years, in just a few lines. They change our perspectives forever, they touch our lives and open new windows in our minds. You start seeing the world through a whole new lens.

As a Neurologist and especially while working with neurodegenerative disorders, we often deal with families who struggle to come to terms with the morbid nature and the consequences of these incurable disorders. Unknowingly, as physicians, we break away from the boundaries of ‘optimism’ or ‘ pessimism ‘ and become realists. We look for the light at the end of the tunnel, yet acknowledge the long, seemingly unending darkness of the tunnel.

There are days when you come across individuals and families who have accepted the inevitable, yet they unleash their strongest version and create magic. It is when they realize the finite period of existence, that they realize their infinite potential. They break their limiting notions. They don’t shudder at the word ‘death’, they face it with all their might.

Life is finite, and our potential is huge.
Why not live our dream lives?
Why not create a masterpiece?
Why not make this world a better place?

A few months ago, I was walking past the book shelves of a store, smelling the fresh scent and scanning the names of the books, when I came across this book. It caught my attention and I picked it up.
“Behave- The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst ”- it read.

I was always inquisitive about the basis of human behaviors. Why would a polite and gentle person choose to show rudeness or disproportionate anger? People would say, “ This was not expected from you?”

How do we determine the limitations of a character? How do we categorize somebody based on their expected spectrum of behaviors? With passing time, I realized that light and darkness coexist, black and white often blend, our behaviors and identities are nothing but shades of gray. Yes, people can witness us at our Best as well as at our Worst during a single lifetime. The sooner we accept this fact, the better place this world will be. Instead of judging people, if we become more empathetic in our homes and our workplaces, we can equip ourselves with the wisdom to help each other out.

This book takes us on a rollercoaster ride through the caverns of human mind and decodes the basis of human emotions and behaviors. It is indeed a complex interplay of genetics, life experiences, circumstances, resilience, emotion regulation and neurotransmitters.

The author Dr. Robert M Sapolsky, has crafted his years of experience, put them into words and gifted us this masterpiece. We must move ahead and leave behind the inappropriate dichotomy between ‘mind’ and ‘brain’…between ‘psychiatry’ and ‘neurology’. It was always a spectrum and unfathomable beyond our present knowledge and perception.

Our life, as I believe, must be like those books on the shelves, every individual has a different story to tell, hiding within the cover pages with all its mystery and uncertainty, waiting for life to unfold in different ways. Human emotions and behaviors are colorful tapestries stitched together with care and love.

Happy reading!

It is always a privilege to participate in dementia awareness initiatives. I am thankful to team Emoha and team Narayana Health for organizing an interactive session—special thanks to Mr. Varun Singh from Narayana and Mr. Dibakar Das from Emoha. It is also interesting to note that more and more older adults in India are showing interest in picking up the early signs of dementia.
