Kolkata Sanved is a women-led pioneer in the field of dance movement therapy (DMT) for healing, empowerment & psycho-social rehabilitation of marginalised populations. We use DMT as a tool for promoting holistic well-being & enhancement of quality of life. Founded in 2004 by Ashoka Fellow Dr. Sohini Chakraborty, a sociologist and dance activist, Kolkata Sanved has expanded the notions of dance and t

raditional rehabilitation programs. Through our groundbreaking program, survivors of trafficking and violence release trauma, develop confidence and identify their own potentials as human beings rather than as victims. At its core, the program allows survivors to develop specific life-skills important for their reintegration through a non-threatening and culturally familiar medium.

Mental health begins with belonging.

This International Youth Day, Kolkata Sanved brought together more than 600 young people from North Bengal's tea garden communities through Dance Movement Therapy, creative expression, music, and dialogue.

Together, they explored emotions, identity, resilience, and hope—not through lectures, but through participation, creativity, and movement.

Because youth mental health is not only about responding to crisis.
It is about creating everyday spaces where young people feel safe to express themselves and know they matter.

Five days of learning may come to an end, but their impact continues long after.

The final day of our Leadership Learning Institute brought together everything the cohort had explored—through presentations, dialogue, and collective reflection. Participants connected ideas around purpose, vulnerability, ecosystems of care, social inclusion, and mental health to the realities of their everyday practice.

This is not a training that ends with a certificate. It is an ongoing commitment to learning, questioning, and growing as practitioners and leaders.

Last year, we began this journey with Cohort 1 – Batch 1. This year, Cohort 1 – Batch 2 completed their learning journey. We are building leadership intentionally, one cohort at a time—strengthening practitioners so they can create more thoughtful, ethical, and inclusive spaces for healing.

Because when practitioners continue to learn, communities continue to heal.

Inclusion is more than participation.

It means creating environments where people feel safe, valued, and able to thrive.

Day 4 focused on understanding systemic barriers and examining how practitioners can contribute to more inclusive communities through thoughtful, equitable practice.

Healing is never an individual journey alone.

Day 3 explored the systems that sustain wellbeing—from relationships and communities to policies and institutions. Participants reflected on how mental health and social development are deeply connected, and why lasting change depends on strengthening both.

Because care grows stronger when it is shared.

People are more than the stories they have survived.

Day 2 invited participants to reflect on vulnerability—not as something to collect or document, but something to hold with ethics, humility, and care.

Trauma-informed practice begins with respect.

Before we ask how to create change, we ask why the work exists.

Day 1 focused on purpose and root cause analysis—looking beyond individual experiences to understand the wider systems shaping mental health and wellbeing. Using mind mapping, participants explored the connections between people, communities, institutions, and social realities.

Real change begins with understanding context.

Healing work is about more than skills. It requires reflection, critical thinking, and the courage to ask difficult questions.
At Kolkata Sanved, our Learning Institute was created to strengthen the leadership of our second-generation practitioners through immersive learning rooted in mental health, social development, inclusion, and collective care.

This year's cohort completed five days of learning, dialogue, and reflection—investing not just in individual growth, but in the future of community mental health.
Because when practitioners grow, communities grow with them.

Movement has a unique way of bringing together body, mind, and emotions.
Whether it's a gentle sway, a shared rhythm, or a joyful dance, moving with music can reduce stress, improve physical wellbeing, strengthen emotional resilience, and create moments of connection. At Kolkata Sanved, we believe movement is not about performance—it's about expression, belonging, and experiencing wellbeing in ways that feel natural and accessible.
Sometimes, the smallest movement can make the biggest difference.
